cinnamon stick Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I live in Canada, and if I were to win a game show such as BigBrother it would be tax free. Does anyone know how much the winner will actually get after taxes, or is it the same as in Canada?
GingerSnaps Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Because I've never been happy with any of the winners, it would be most rewarding to know that these losers wind up with less than half the money.
Yana Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Cinnamon if you would like, I could try and ask one of the past houseguests... In fact I can ask Dick if you like and he will know, if he's willing to divulge that information...
theoriginalpj Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Yana I would love to know if he's willing!!
snancypants Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I thought I heard somewhere they end up with about 58% because the taxes are around 42%. so maybe they end up with about 300K. I believe (may be wrong though) that the winners lose their weekly stipend and any damages come out of each HG money also.
cinnamon stick Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Yana....please do ask !! How much is the weekly stipend?
a_starry_night Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I just read on the update page somewhere James says the winner gets $250,000 and the runner up gets $50,000 and the rest get $9,000-10,000 ? I was wondering where he got 250 from since I always thought it was half a million.

Yeah I think they tax the winnings at around about 40% so they will come home with about 300K
Athena28 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Are you sure it would be tax free b/c you live in Canada? It looks like sometimes yes and sometimes no. Hopefully it would be yes for you. US/Canada Tax Questions
cinnamon stick Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 I`m pretty sure it is tax free. I would still have to declare it on my taxes but I wouldn`t have to pay tax on it. I wish Canada would get a BigBrother edition....I would sooooo apply to be on it. I would make all my Mortys friends so proud.
Drummer1 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 It is not tax free. Just ask Richard Hatch about that one.
cinnamon stick Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 Richard Hatch is an American who won a game based out of the USA. I am a Canadian, and if I won a game based out of Canada I wouldn't have to pay taxes on it....................
Yana Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I did ask Dick about the prize money and he didn't answer... He also didn't answer about if his opinion's have changed since the season started... I can understand him not wanting to answer though... Here's what he did say though... My opinion about? The season? The Houseguests? Strange season, seems to be coming together now that the couples are split up. What the hell is up with 3 people that were legitimately evicted still in the house? The people.... a bit, but I would have to go read what I wrote and it is late and I have an early call for the pov. Dick
TCS Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Thanks for posting the reply Yana..... As for how much the winner gets.....this year, whatever it is is TOOOOO much! I'd give them $100 bucks and kick them out the door!
uvp Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 i always wanted the comp winner to get bonuses hoh 1,000 pov 500
snancypants Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 That's not a bad thought - it might make them think more about throwing a comp that way.
shann Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Yeah, that would add a whole new level to the game UVP!! Why don't you apply for the position of producer?
Reaper Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 i always wanted the comp winner to get bonuses hoh 1,000 pov 500 UVP, I love the idea, as long as it doesn't get taken out of their stipend... It would make them less likely to throw the comps... Great idea!
bb11addict Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 hey, but don't forget that the winner only get $500,000 total before tax, their weekly stipend gets taken out of the prize money the runner up might be different but, it might be the same, don't know.
