TheGreatXL
Eh, well, there is no sense if having this discussion if we can't do it maturely, so I'm happy you weren't offended. And what do you mean by "how they were raised"? I have tons of gay friends who all came from uber-Christian backgrounds that obviously condemn them. I mean, if being gay were a choice, how many of them would you honestly think would choose to be gay? Very few I'd imagine. And again, these polls can't be completely accurate. Because what decribes being gay can be something different to each person. Nick in this year's BB is a perfect example. He gave a guy oral sex once, so you have many people that would think he was atleast Bi, and then you'd have another group of people who would think he was completely straight who's had one gay encounter. erinjs
I agree XL, there are alot more gay people than we realize, and I remember teaching it, and using a poll that said one out of every 10. So that's gotta be close. I also agree that if it were a choice lifestyle, no one would choose it, due to all of the bashing that homosexuals get. Nick's the perfect example. I would say bi, but that's me.

oldguy
Sorry to interrupt this serious discussion, but I just walked in here and saw my name being bandied about several times. First, let me say I refuse to be CO-PIMP! The job is mine and mine alone. I'm not getting too old for it and I don't need a vacation! As for shuffing paperwork - while doing so yesterday I noticed that 2 members have not paid their quarterly dues. I won't name names, but they rhyme with Binger and Drizlzle. As for my being "serviced", well, uh--ahem--I'm somewhat red-faced, but we can work something out. ~~~oldguy races out of thread, hat flying off, and shirttail flapping behind him.~~~
erinjs
king, you do have a point there. Generally, if you are raised in a family that has racist, bigot attitudes and beliefs, they are more often than not passed down through the generations. However, that is changing today with the newer generations, who are becoming more accepting of ALL differences in people. Of course, there are always going to be those select few that will never, even accept differences as normal.
yath
king, it IS a fact---Depending which study is cited, it's now been concluded, in scientific studies, that a MINIMUM of 10% of the population is gay. And King, I don't believe you can say, with any credibility, "I don't think that is a fact". One doesn't have opinions about facts. Yes, in my field of work, I know a lot of studies. I don't need to cite them; if you want to inform yourself just google it. And uh, in my opinion, "being uncomfortable around a porn star" cannot be put in the same category as discomfort around gays. But heck, that's just my opinion. And, having stated my opinion while staying within the context of the rules, I will now make my graceful exit. (Run, run...) King123
i just dont think if you are uncomfortable around gay people, means your not comfortable with your sexuality. ithink its absurd to assume that.
yath
Well, that's your opinion, and I certainly respect your right to have an opinion. Where I disagree is with anyone giving their "opinion" about scientific fact.
TheGreatXL
I've grown up in the South my entire life. In fact, I lived right down the street from the Grand Wizard of the KKK at one time. So racism, to this very day, is still being passed down through generations. I figure the same is happening to homophobia, but to a higher extent, because people feel like they can justify it. I mean, it was quite obvious that treating people different based on their skin color was the stupidest thing ever, because people who are of a different race were absolutely born that way -- no if, and, or buts about it. Gay people have it harder in that arguement, because there are no studies that conclude anything one way or the other, so people can always use religious text as their arguement against gay people. And organized religion is so powerful that there is absoutely no way for gay people to fight their arguement in any religious terms (by organized, I'm talking about things like Evangilists who form actual powerful political groups). snancypants
okay I just got home from work and found out I can't be a dirty hooker until I have 500 posts!!! That settles it - tomorrow I am giving my notice at work. I can't ever achieve Dirty Hooker status if I keep my job! Will you guys be able to contribute to my Dirty "Destitute" Hooker fund??? (It may take me a while cuz I only post when I have something VERY profound to say! ROFL)
erinjs
Yup, and that's why homosexuality is such a debated topic now, especially in politics. Religion comes and rears its ugly head, and makes everything much more complicated than it has to be. I'm not against religion, I'm Catholic. I'm just saying that religion gets involved in everything from homosexuality to harry potter.

King123
Where I disagree is with anyone giving their "opinion" about scientific fact i just never heard that statistic before, and it seemed like they were just coming up with it, and i dont believe its that high. and i just wanted some them to show me where they heard that. TheGreatXL
It varys from poll to poll. Right winged religious groups say it's as low as 1%, and gay rights groups all say 10%. That's why I said 7% to 10%. There is is no way of telling an exact number. I think these measure difficulties sum up why: Survey data regarding stigmatized or deeply personal feelings or activities are often inaccurate. Participants often avoid answers which they feel society, the survey-takers, or they themselves dislike. The research must select measure some characteristic that may or may not be defining of sexual orientation, and that may involve further testing problems. The class of people with same-sex desires may be larger than the class of people who act on those desires, which in turn may be larger than the class of people who self-identify as gay/lesbian/bisexual.In studies measuring sexual activity, respondents may have different ideas about what constitutes a "sexual act." There are several different biological and psychosocial components to sex and gender, and a given person may not cleanly fit into a particular category. yath
As I said before, king, google it, and you'll find a whole slue of studies to back that statistic. Actually, most people in the Social Sciences assume the number to be significantly higher, for obvious reasons: a good number of ppl don't "come out" for fear of reprisal, either on a personal or job-related level. erinjs
Yup, definately. 10% is low.
TheGreatXL
Yeah, who knows, when being gay becomes unstigmitized by society, you might see a very high number of gay people. That's why the gay population seems to be "on the rise" now. Because 30 years ago, it was a death wish to say you were gay, so people wouldn't even admit it to pollsters.
