  8. Dr. Phil Confronts Pat O'Brien in Special NEW YORK (AP) - This didn't take long: Pat O'Brien, fresh from rehab, will have to face Dr. Phil next week in a prime-time CBS special. Dr. Phil McGraw will "confront O'Brien about the incidents that led up to his stay in the recovery program, the issues he faced while in treatment and the stories about his personal life that made headline news," CBS said Friday. The hour-long special will air Wednesday at 8 p.m. (ET). O'Brien, host of "The Insider" syndicated entertainment newsmagazine, is expected back at work Thursday after undergoing treatment in an alcohol rehabilitation program. He exited the program April 24. A recording of obscene phone messages left by what sounds like O'Brien's voice hurtled around the Internet while he was gone and became frequent water cooler talk. O'Brien will talk about how he will deal with his colleagues when he returns to work and how to approach life without alcohol, CBS said. He'll also appear May 5 on the syndicated "Dr. Phil" talk show.
  9. Gyllenhaal fan site swamped with hate posts NEW YORK -- A fan Web site dedicated to Maggie Gyllenhaal has shut down its bulletin board after the actress drew a storm of criticism for suggesting America was "responsible in some way" for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The actress, who starred in "Secretary" in 2002, made the comments last week at the Tribeca Film Festival while speaking about her new film, "The Great New Wonderful," which is about people living in the aftermath of the attacks in New York. Fan Web site www.maggie-gyllenhaal.net, which has no official links to the actress, said its server had been overloaded and crashed on Wednesday, a day after it was forced to take down a bulletin board due to the volume of critical messages being left on it. "It's gotten too outta hand," the webmaster of the site wrote after earlier appeals for people not to send hate mail.
  10. What's the price of love? Us Weekly pays big bucks for pix of Brad & Angelina BY BEN WIDDICOMBE DAILY NEWS Here they are - the pictures that sparked a massive magazine bidding war. These are just some of the two dozen pictures taken last Tuesday of Brad Pitt, 41, vacationing with his reputed girlfriend, Angelina Jolie, 29, and her son, Maddox, 3, on a Kenyan beach. Us Weekly paid a record sum for the pics, which will be in its May 9 issue, coming out tomorrow. While the word inside the mag is that Jann Wenner's celebrity title parted with an amount in the mid-six figures, another source close to the heated negotiations says the figure for the coveted pics may have been closer to a million dollars. Although the photographer didn't capture even one kiss between Hollywood's sexiest stars, there is no mistaking the intimacy of their relationship. "Depending on who you are, it's either a great scandal or a great romance," Us Weekly editor-in-chief Janice Min told the Daily News. While Pitt and Jolie's reps have been pouring cold water on speculation that the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-stars are Hollywood's hottest couple, it seems the secret is out. "The proof is in the pictures," Min said. "This is the story that everyone who talks about celebrities has been following for five months now, and to finally have the proof right there in your hand is great." Pitt's ex, Jennifer Aniston, has been in low spirits on the set of "Friends with Money," according to a source. (Her next project, with Vince Vaughn, is titled "The Breakup.") The former "Friends" actress, 36, filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court on March 25, after the couple announced their surprise split in January. "The Brad and Jen breakup was the biggest celebrity news story of the year. ... It would be incredibly damaging to both stars to have there be any implication that there was a third party involved," Min said. But how did these pictures come to be? In the absence of any statement from the stars' reps, the rumor mill has been churning with theories. Pagesixsixsix.com, a gossip Web site that published early word of the pictures on Friday, yesterday cited an "inside source" saying: "Turns out Ange [Jolie] tipped off the [photo] agency herself on the condition they didn't reveal they were on holiday till they left." Daily News source adds: "When you're Brad Pitt and you're Angelina Jolie and you're tired of hiding, this is a great way to do it. You do it in a remote location, bring your child out and don't have physical intimacy that's obvious in photos. This is a way to break the news softly." Pitt met up with the Jolies at the Alfajiri Villas, a kid-friendly Kenyan resort, on his way to Ethiopia, where he is collaborating with U2's Bono on the One Campaign to fight AIDS and extreme poverty. But will the public warm to a Brad and Angelina double act? "It really depends on how they play it out right now," Min said. "The one thing all fans and celebrities seem to have in common is that they love a good romance."

  16. Man Spits In Jane Fonda's Face KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 20, 2005 (AP) A man spit tobacco juice into the face of actress Jane Fonda after waiting in line to have her sign her new book, police said. The man ran off but was quickly caught by police Tuesday night and charged with disorderly conduct. Fonda has been on tour and doing interviews to promote her just-published memoir, "My Life So Far." The thrice-married, two-time Academy Award winner covers a wide array of topics, including her 1972 visit to Hanoi to protest the Vietnam War, during which she was photographed on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. She has apologized for that photo, but not for opposing the war. Capt. Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City Police Department said he did not know if the man who spit on Fonda was a veteran. Lockhart said that although Fonda did not want to press charges against Michael A. Smith, 54, of Kansas City, he was arrested on a municipal charge of disorderly conduct after off-duty officers caught him just outside Unity Temple, where Fonda was signing books. Lockhart said Smith was released on bond late Tuesday night and is due to appear in municipal court on May 27. There was no answer Wednesday at the number listed for the address police provided for Smith. Fonda drew a crowd of about 900 for her appearance, said Vivian Jennings, whose Rainy Day Books of suburban Fairway, Kan., sponsored the event at Unity Temple in Kansas City. Fonda, 67, spoke for about 15 minutes, answered questions for another 15, then began signing copies of her book. Jennings said Fonda received a standing ovation when she came out and when she finished speaking. Alan Tilson, one of those who had his book signed but left before the incident, said the crowd was very "warm and supportive" to Fonda and he was surprised to learn what had happened. Jennings said the actress never got up from her seat and continued autographing books after the tobacco juice was wiped off. "The important thing is that she was so calm and so gracious about it," Jennings said of Fonda. "She was wonderful." Jennings said that the man had a book to which the name "Jody" had been affixed as he approached to have it autographed. She said that when Fonda got the book, she looked up and said, "You're not Jody." "At that moment, he turned his head quickly and spit a trail of tobacco juice," Jennings said. "He immediately jumped off the stage and started running down the aisle." Jynne Martin of Random House, Fonda's publisher, said the actress was flying to Minneapolis Wednesday for another appearance on the book tour she began April 5 and expected to have a statement later.
  17. New Pope No Fan Of Rock, Pop Music Newly elected Pope Joseph Ratzinger of Germany waves to the crowd from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, at the Vatican on Tuesday. While Pope John Paul II took the stage with Bob Dylan and hobnobbed with the likes of Bono, his successor takes a different view of secular music. In a 2000 book, 'The Spirit of the Liturgy," new Pope Benedict XVI extensively discusses the role of music in worship. The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, known as a conservative, writes that pop music "is aimed at the phenomenon of the masses, is industrially produced, and ultimately has to be described as a cult of the banal." Rock music fairs no better. It is the "expression of elemental passions, is another kind of "worship" altogether.'' At rock festivals, he notes, "it assumes a cultic character, a form of worship, in fact, in opposition to Christian worship." The points were made to distinguish music used in Catholic rituals from other forms of expression. Ratzinger notes that "liturgical music must lift man's heart to Christ rather than plunge it into intoxicating sensuality." Pope Benedict XVI is an accomplished pianist and reportedly has a deep affection for Beethoven.
  18. Britney conforms pregnancy on her website April 12, 2005 Britney Reveals Pregnancy! Ending weeks of speculation, BRITNEY SPEARS announced that she is pregnant today. On her Website, the pop princess issued a statement to fans saying, "The time has finally come to share our wonderful news that we are expecting our first child together. There are reports that I was in the hospital this weekend, KEVIN and I just want everyone to know that all is well." Last month, Britney hinted at the upcoming announcement, saying: "I feel as though I have been very quiet and still lately. 'The calm before the storm' ... I can really relate to that statement right now." Marrying dancer KEVIN FEDERLINE last fall made Britney more than a new wife, she's also step-mom to his 2-year-old and newborn baby with "Moesha" actress SHAR JACKSON. Earlier this year, she told "The Insider"'s STEVEN COJOCARU that she's determined to make her own family. "I want to be a young mom. That's my dream. You can judge me however you want. I'm happy. That's what I wanna do!" The 23-year-old pop star wed Kevin in a surprise ceremony on Sept 18. About 30 guests, including Britney's mom and sister, attended the Saturday night nuptials, which took place in a white tent erected in the backyard of her wedding planner's home. JAMIE LYNN and her mom arrived wearing pink velour sweatsuits and carrying goodie bags stuffed with gifts like silver pendants with the couple's picture inside. Guests were asked to sign confidentiality agreements and were whisked there in passenger vans from their respective hotels. The beaming bride left the house in the early hours the next day and headed for her wedding reception at Dublin's nightclub in Hollywood. A laughing Britney, who had dyed her hair brunette, and her brand-new husband departed the home in a black SUV. The rest of the guests emerged wearing sweatsuits -- the girls in pink, the boys in white with the word "Pimps" embroidered on the back. Kevin's dad had his own special sweatsuit that said "Pimp Daddy."
  19. You've Seen the Wedding; Now See the Romance Only days after the wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles on Saturday, the British network ITV said today (Monday) that it plans to produce a film, about the couple's early romance. In a statement, Damien Timmer, head of drama, said: "As a nation we know very little about the early days of Charles and Camilla's love affair. Almost instantly they developed a loving and compelling relationship and it soon became apparent to Charles that he had met his soul mate," he said. "This is a sensitive portrayal of their love and friendship prior to his meeting and marrying Diana." The title comes from a notorious quote made by the prince when he announced his marriage to Diana. When asked whether he was in love with her, he replied, "Of course," then added, "Whatever love means."

  22. BB6 Reality TV hopefuls head to Waterford Web-posted Apr 7, 2005 By CAROL HOPKINS Of The Daily Oakland Press WATERFORD TWP. - Being locked in a house for 100 days with complete strangers where your every move is filmed apparently intrigues many people. Auditions for "Big Brother 6," CBS' claustrophobia-inducing reality show that promises $500,000 to the winner, drew about 100 hopeful housemates to Waterford's Shark Club Wednesday. Show producers are holding auditions around the country and plan to air the show in early July. They said the next round will be the semifinals, and they expect to name finalists near the end of the month. Described by one observer as " 'Survivor' in a house," the show has included players who were polar opposites, whose personalities were "arrogant, obstinate and obnoxious," said Matt Malyn, CBS-UPN Detroit director of communications. Sitting alone at the back of the nightclub, professional gambler Kelly Fabinjanski, 36, of Highland Township, had no problem explaining why she would win. "I have an evil streak," said Fabinjanski, whose specialty is blackjack. "If I don't get what I want, I will turn the situation around to my advantage." At another table, Val Arnold, 33, of Holly shared a smoke with Kim Ash, 25, of St. Clair Shores as they waited to film their two-minute audition tapes. Calling herself a "big reality show buff," Ash said her job as a bartender would help her in the "Big Brother" house - which will be in Los Angeles this season. "I'm used to characters," she said. Another contender, Mike Saagman, 37, of Grand Rapids said he used his day off from selling waterbeds to try out. "I'll play the game the best," he said. "I'll win by my boyish charm." A faithful fan of the show, Saagman recalled stomach-turning moments from past seasons, including the time one contestant used another housemate's toothbrush to clean a toilet. Another episode included a player tossing a salad with his bare, very unclean, hands. "Nobody ate the salad," Saagman said, laughing. The scenario would have upset avowed neat freak, Nicholas Baker, 27, a contestant who drove to Waterford from Germantown, Ohio. Ex-wife Crystal Baker of Waterford Township had alerted him to the audition. "I told him he could walk to it from my house," she said, pointing toward her neighborhood a stone's throw from the nightclub. Some people who showed up had never seen the show. Russell Rabb, 28, of Ypsilanti said a friend had told him about auditions. "I'm going in blind," he said. A former Marine and "repo" man, Raab said there were many reasons he should be chosen for the house. "I'm energetic and fun," he said. "On a scale of one to 10, I'm a strong nine on an off day." During Amy Smith's audition, the peppy 28-year-old Oakland University education student - a semifinalist for the show in 2003 - gave it all she had. Smiling into the camera, she said, "I am the ultimate houseguest. Please give me a chance. America is going to love me!"

  25. Pope's Mystery Cardinal Could Be Revealed By FRANCES D'EMILIO, Associated Press Writer VATICAN CITY - What happens to the mystery cardinal the late Pope John Paul II selected in 2003 but never publicly identified? Will the world ever find out who was picked? Vatican watchers wondered Monday whether there was still a way in accordance with Church law for this unidentified "prince of the Church" to take his place among the cardinals and, if he is young enough, vote for the new pope. When John Paul created new cardinals in 2003, he announced that he was keeping one name secret, or "in pectore," meaning "in the heart." This is a formula that has been used when the pope wants to name a cardinal in a country where the church is oppressed. Vatican watchers have speculated that the prelate could be from China, where only a state-sanctioned church is recognized. But Polish Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, 65, John Paul's longtime private secretary who was at his bedside when he died, has also been mentioned as the possible secret cardinal. The Rev. James Conn, a professor of canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, said that if John Paul identified the man in writing in some authenticated document before he died, the man would be a cardinal. "I think that any means of publishing the name of the cardinal that was previously not revealed, including in some testimonial that was authenticated, would be acceptable," Conn said. Canon law says only that the pope has to make his name public. But it doesn't say whether that has to be done orally, he said. Once the name is made public, the cardinal "is bound by the same duties and possesses the same rights" of the other cardinals, including the right to vote for a new pope if he is younger than 80, canon law says. There are now 117 cardinals eligible to vote in the conclave to elect John Paul's successor. John Paul has named three other "in pectore" cardinals whose names were later revealed, including Marian Jaworski, archbishop of Lviv, Ukraine, for Catholics who follow the Latin rite, and Janis Pujats of Riga, Latvia. Both Ukraine and Latvia formerly belonged to the officially atheist Soviet Union. The third was Ignatius Kung Pin-Mei, an elderly Chinese bishop who spent 30 years in Chinese prisons for defying attempts by China's communist government to control Roman Catholics through the state-run church. While in prison in 1979, he was named "in pectore" by John Paul in the first group of cardinals named by the pontiff. His name was made public in 1991, nine years before he died in Connecticut at the age of 98.
