House on FOX

Recommended Posts

The premiere episode was awesome. I love the exchange between him and the kid who jumped off the roof. House is always so quick to dismiss mental illness (like it's something that can be cured..or it's just in your head). I really like that it showed that mental illness is real and while it is, it doesn't mean that these people aren't also aware of others around them (like how the kid knew the girl needed the music box). I was sad to see House leave the institution. I was kind of hoping he'd stay there awhile. I love Gideon (the psych doctor...now I see his real name is Andre but I still can't help but refer to him as his other character..man, that was a great show!)

House Episode Discussion: "Epic Fail"

Sep 28, 2009 05:38 PM ET by Gina DiNunno

Watch Episode

After leaving the psychiatric hospital at the end of last week's premiere, House tells Cuddy that he's making major changes in his life. Meanwhile, Foreman wants House's job but is having trouble with a case involving a video-game designer who posts his symptoms on the Internet and takes treatment suggestions offered by online correspondents over those offered by the team. This development upsets Foreman and threatens his relationship with Thirteen.

This week's episode begins in the traditional style where a patient, who creates virtual reality video games, is admitted to Princeton-Plainsboro with a bizarre ailment. As soon as the patient asks for the famous diagnostician he heard about, the scene cuts to House telling Cuddy and Foreman that he quits because he doesn't want to risk going back to his old environment and habits.

Foreman Takes Control

As soon as House leaves, Foreman immediately says he wants to run the department, but diagnostic departments are few and far between, according to Cuddy. The only reason they kept it around was because House is a genius. But Cuddy says she'll give him one chance to prove he can handle it, and the team begins brainstorming about the case of the video gamer's burning hands.

While Thirteen, Taub and Foreman try to come to a conclusion, the patient, Vince, thinks he has mercury poisoning based on what he read on the Internet. He convinces Thirteen and Taub to test his blood, but when Foreman finds out, he cops quite the attitude about his underlings not doing what they're told. Foreman tries to tell Vince mercury isn't the issue, but he demands a different set of tests. Somehow Foreman manages to strong-arm him into doing his spinal procedure, but when that causes his lungs to fill with fluid, Foreman suspects drugs.

Foreman and Thirteen both ask Vince if he's using, and the patient says no (only after hacking into Foreman's Facebook page to check up on him). Foreman tells Thirteen to do some investigating to see if he's telling the truth and Thirteen tells Foreman to stop comparing his technique to that of House.

Thirteen and Taub go to Vince's video-gaming studio where the two talk about Foreman as their new boss. Thirteen then comes to the conclusion that Vince may have picked up an infection from one of the birds he dissected while studying its anatomy for his game. But when Vince reveals he's had an erection for three hours, it's back to square one.

House Dabbles in Hobbies

In therapy, House says the chronic pain in his leg is really starting to get to him, so Nolan suggests he take up a hobby. Wilson allows House to tag along with him to cooking class and House ends up using his brilliance to figure out what ingredients work together.

Cuddy stops by Wilson's to talk to House and make sure he's not leaving on her account. She tells him she'll miss him, but House's cooking buddy basically kicks her out. The cooking actually starts to get a little out of hand as House starts to stay up all night treating each recipe like a patient in need of a diagnosis. But culinary arts aren't enough to distract House from the pain he is feeling in his leg without the drugs. Nolan tells him to try something else if cooking isn't helping him.

House returns to his old apartment where he finds a bottle of leftover drugs. We don't see whether he takes them, but all of a sudden, he's doing Wilson's laundry, is happy as can be and isn't using his cane.

Wilson tells Cuddy he messed with his toilet so that it would capture House's urine, and while the results were negative, they were also that of a Golden Retriever. The two assume he's using again, but when they confront him, House says he was trying to mess with Wilson. He even proves it by dumping his coffee and peeing in his mug right in front of their eyes.

Everyone's a Doctor These Days

Foreman and Thirteen are bickering like a married couple when they see new doctors in Vince's room. It turns out Vince posted his symptoms online to see if he can get a correct diagnosis for once. One of the new doctors suggests a brain tumor, but Foreman shoots the theory down. Thirteen, on the other hand, says the other doc has a point and Foreman is pissed she second-guessed him publically like that.

Thirteen goes to complain to House about Foreman, and his advice is for her to give in sometimes in order to be happy. Wow, he really has changed his tune. Foreman, on the other hand, complains to Chase, who tells him either to fire her or stop taking it so personally.

Foreman brings Thirteen a donut and apologizes. She apologizes as well, and just as they are about to start over (sans clothes) they get paged because Vince's condition has worsened. And to make matters even worse, he's offering a $25,000 reward for anyone online who can diagnose him correctly.

The phone lines explode with guesses for the correct diagnosis, and based on popular demand, the patient wants to be tested for amyloidosis. Foreman agrees to test if Vince promises to take the case off the Internet.

The tests are positive for amyloidosis, and while Foreman is down about being wrong, Taub makes things even worse by telling him he's quitting and taking another job elsewhere. It turns out he only wanted to be there if House was working. Thirteen tries to make light of the situation, but when that doesn't cheer Foreman up, she tells her boyfriend a story about her and another cheerleader from school. Kinky.

The next day, the patient appears to be suffering from hallucinations brought on by a fever, which means it's not amyloidosis. Foreman says Vince needs chemo, but has a "light bulb moment" shortly thereafter when he realizes Vince has a different condition since his fingers didn't prune after sitting in an ice bath. But as soon as he rushes to stop the chemo, Thirteen is one step ahead of him. Not because she's brilliant but because she checked the online responses one last time before starting chemo.

The case is closed as the patient is correctly treated, and Cuddy says Foreman can run the department. Thirteen goes to congratulate him, but Foreman tells her it's just not working out. He's not breaking up with her; he's just firing her. Wow. That definitely won't affect the relationship.

House to the Rescue

The real kicker of the episode comes when House is in therapy and admits to Nolan he has slipped up

I found this episode very interesting. Watching Foreman try to take over and realizing the job isn't as easy as he assumed it would be. That was priceless! It also took him down a notch or two, lol

I was glad to see the rapport between House and Wilson was still there. It would take a pretty strong person to have a person like House as a friend. He seems to cope with it pretty well. Leave it up to House to go online and come up with the diagnosis. He can't help himself. Being a genius can be a burden at times, rofl

I'm looking forward to next week when he gets back to his job and continues driving his team nuts. Even though the season premiere was two hours long it seemed to fly by.

BTW....was anybody else confused with the beginning of the show? I had to check my television to be sure I was on the right channel. I thought I had entered the twilight zone there for a minute!! :animated_rotfl:

The season opener was FANTASTIC-it had a feature length movie feel to it. That episode will definitely be the one they use to get nominated for the next Emmys... The 2nd episode was great too. I'm lovin this season so far!!

The episode on October 5th was good. Even though House doesn't have his license back he's still contributing to the diagnosis on patients.

I thought James Earl Jones did an amazing job! I have to admit I really didn't expect that ending at all!

Holy crap!! :shocking:

Loved it as well but can anyone explain to me the scene where House puts the amputee's arms in the box? I guess I'm a little dense on this but I'm still am not sure how it was that House cured him of his pain. Also, what was House's comment about the guy blowing up his own arm...?

What didn't you like? I haven't watched every episode this season, but I'm just curious. I'm pretty sure that Cuddy is in for a very wild ride...

Oh, I hope not. That would be a "jump the shark" moment for me.

What didn't you like?

Personally, I never like it when shows do a "disaster" episode. Too much time is spent on the disaster part and not enough on the characters who are what makes a show interesting to me. And obviously something is wrong with "13" and I thought more time should have been spent on that while not revealing what is wrong so we'd have a little more invested in watching it next fall.

not fond of the disaster thing, but that's not why I didn't like it.

I'm sick of Cuddy 'toying with' House. she's firm, sets boundries, he starts making progress and she buckles, which gives him back the power ..... I just don't like it.

Season 6 Debut was good. I like the whole yes/no thing between Cuddy and house, i hope they can get together and stuff, I think it would be good for the show, I was like, lol when she hid in the closet when Wilson was coming in the window and made house look like his wacked out Vicodon, I like at the end when he was like its not gonna work then she said she said she loved him for the guy he is, and then he was finally was able to to tell her that he loved her.

On a side note i missed last seasons finale so i watched it before i downnloaded this eposide and i thought it was like a touching moment when he talked the girl into cutting her leg off and stuff, telling her about him and how it changed him, i hope cuddy isnt messing with house, but i dont think she is.

Season 6 is going to be good.

On a side note i laughed my rear off at the neurosurgeon all doped up, the dude was like "is he stoned?" lol

Overall 3 1/2 stars out of 5
