"Third Watch" Clocks Out

By Bridget Byrne

Third Watch is on death watch.

NBC has announced that the drama about New York's finest--the cops, firefighters and paramedics from the fictional 55th Precinct working the mean streets during the graveyard shift--will not return for a seventh season next fall.

The troops are not on duty at the moment anyway, having vacated the Friday at 9 p.m. time slot for the midseason entry of Law & Order: Trial by Jury. However, final episodes of the series will begin airing Apr. 8. No word yet on how the series will end, but the swan-song episode, tentatively titled "End of Tour," will begin shooting next week and is slated to air May 6.

While never a major headliner, Third Watch has done well enough to last for six seasons, surviving time shifts and big-time cast turnover (especially over the past two seasons, which saw the departures of key ensemble players like Michael Beach, Eddie Cibrian, Amy Carlson and Kim Raver and the addition of Nia Long and Josh Stewart.

The show, produced by Warner Bros. TV and John Wells Productions, adapted its storylines to honor the memory of the firefighters who lost their lives in the September 11 terrorist attacks, and picked up a Peabody award for "In Their Own Words," the special nonfiction episode featuring the city's real heroes, which aired in October 2001.

Its best ratings came in the 2002-03 season when, playing on Monday nights, it averaged 11.6 million viewers. Last season, when it mostly aired at 10 p.m. Fridays, Third Watch attracted 9.4 million. This season, bumped an hour earlier, it has been averaging 9.3 million.

NBC, which last week announced the pickups of Crossing Jordan, ER, Joey, Las Vegas and The West Wing, will announces its complete fall schedule in May.

I know, I was a little teary eyed myself! I can't wait to watch it, but yet I hate

to,because I know it's the end!

What episode do you remember most? For me, it was the 9/11 special and when Doc went crazy. I was bawling when Doc did what he did, because I loved his character so much!

I've loved this show since the beginning. I can't believe they are ending it. I guess the ratings have a lot to do with it not being renewed. I will miss Bosco  Doc losing it was one of my fav storylines (I loved that character) as was last year's revenge (via Gene Simmons) on Bosco & co.

It took me a long time to get used to it being on Friday nights. I kept forgetting it was on. So, I think the change from Monday to Friday had a lot to do with lower ratings.

So... who's been watching? OMG the past few episodes have been amazing! That creepy vampire guy - ew. Bosco - YAY!

My husband mentioned that both Faith and Cruz look pretty in some lights/shots and damn ugly in others... Anyone else notice this?

So what about the grand finale this week -- what do you think will happen? Who will not make it out of the 55?

I'm thinking Sully, or maybe Faith. Was I crazy, or did I see Doc and Kim in the previews? I can't wait to see how they wrap up all of this in just a one hour episode....

Thoughts? Anyone else totally bummed that Friday nite t.v. will officially suck next season?

I am actually very dissapointed that they are wrapping this up so quickly. They started a basis for so many great story lines and now that are going to ruin it because they have to fast forward everything to wrap it up, in my opinion there is nothing they can do in the one hour finale next week that will be worthy of the show, there will be so many unanswered questions, its really sad that they are ruining such a great show! There it so much potential, the show could keep going. I guess what really gets me is here is a show that was really great, it is a little different then all the other cop shows out there, I guess they want to make room for another Law and Order or another CSI, now don't hate me, I am not saying they are bad shows but I also don't see the point of having 3 or 4 versions of the same show :? . Sorry I know I am ranting I am just very sad to see them ruin a really good show.

Blackcat, I feel your pain. I think it's shocking how they treated this show. It had quite decent ratings for the longest time. Then they kept moving it around, or so it seemed. Last year they changed it around a bit, started to downplay the 'third' part of the show, the firefighters. And then they went and cancelled it. Ah well, as Art-Van-Delay said a few postings back, it will live on in reruns! Though small concilation to the many fans.

Bye Bosco, I will miss you and your wicked ways.... :(

Yes it is a d*** shame THIRD WATCH got the axe. I really got into it after it was moved to Fridays, now I like all the Law and Orders got tired of CSI and I understood when NYPD finished it's run, but this show had promise, oh thank goodness for re-runs 8)

I can't believe that there is only one episode left! and the only way I found that out was through a friend, I have not seen any commercials or anything advertising it. I can't believe we are supposed to be happy with a one hour finale, there is no way they can wrap everything up, there is just to many open story lines, I am so mad that they are doing this. But I guess it doesnt matter what I say, it isnt going to change anything, just have to wait for it to come out on DVD, speaking of which does anyone know when it is coming out on DVD?

Blackcat, not that I have the most up-to-date info, but I read (can't remember where) that no dvds for Third Watch are presently in the works. Might change, we can only hope!

Yes, a stupid waste of a great show. I also have NO idea how they will tie in everything in only an hour finale. Total lack of respect for dedicated fans.

Here is what the last show shall be about:

April 07, 2005

Mike Ausiello of TV Guide Online reports that someone will make the ultimate sacrifice, but executive producer Ed Bernero is confident "everyone will agree that it's the person that should." The big news, however, is that Bernero has recruited some of the show's most popular alums

No not Faith or Emily, although when Faith says Emly instead of Emily i want to scream lol.

I am scared it will be Sully, would have like to see him in a romance with Davis' mom or something!!

Oh, Sully, I hope not. I keep forgetting about him.

I love Faith. I'm ok if it's Emly...lol...no, wouldn't want her to get blown away either.

Guess we'll find out soon enough, but only one freakin' hour for the finale???

I was just doing some searching and I found out that Third Watch is released on DVD in Japan, however becasue there are so many popular songs on each episode they are having troubel with the copywrite laws, they need to get it all cleared before they can release it, so hopefully they will get it all approved and then release it *fingers crossed*
