'A-List Awards' offers look at young people's tastes

June 12, 2008

Summer is cable's time to shine. Actually, the industry has been leaving the lights on all year long in recent years and collectively has a larger piece of the audience pie than the big broadcasters in some ratings comparisons.

So what better time for a cable channel to whip up an awards ceremony of its own? Bravo has stepped into the gap with "The A-List Awards" tonight at 10. It has even rented an official red carpet for the occasion and will station Tim Gunn there at 8:30.

The "A-List" seems to be a spinoff of Kathy Griffin's "D-List" comedic capers that she does for Bravo. She has another one of those tonight at 9, kicking off her fourth season.

Griffin is back an hour later as host for the awards to people who have left their mark on the arts. Bravo viewers voted for the A-List nominees online, and the categories aren't the sort you would find on other such shows.

For instance, there's an A-List honor for the Best Cewebrity. They're people who have risen to stardom on the Internet and would be totally unknown if it hadn't come along. The names and sites will test how in, or out, of touch you are with people who spend a lot of time surfing the Web.

Nominees include Mario Lavandeira of prezhilton.com, a celebrity gossip site that specializes in shocking or bizarre pictures of celebrities. Then there's Christian Lander of stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com a tongue-in-cheek diversity site.

Add Jay Maynard of tronguy.com, who dresses up in some sort of superhero-looking suit and blogs about his somewhat ordinary life.

Obamagirl.com is all about Amber Ettinger, who gained limited fame by appearing in an online video called "I Got a Crush

Bravo's 2008 A-List Awards Host Kathy Griffin

Bravo is dedicated to celebrating the creative process and showcasing some of the leading creative minds working today, and as the only channel to include virtually every popular field of the arts -- beauty, design, fashion, food and pop culture -- it's the most logical home for an event that celebrates these disciplines.

"My Life on the D-List" star Kathy Griffin hosted Bravo's first ever "A-List Awards" honoring those people that have made an indelible mark in the arts, with a special star-studded red carpet pre-show hosted by Tim Gunn. The "A-List Awards" premiered on Bravo on Thursday, June 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT and the red carpet pre-show aired at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.
