LOS ANGELES, California -- Tige Andrews, the Emmy-nominated character actor who portrayed a police captain in charge of a trio of hip, young crime fighters in the popular 60s and 70s hit, "The Mod Squad," died on January 27 of cardiac arrest at his longtime home in Encino in the San Fernando Valley of California, his family said. He was 86.

"Dad was really proud of 'The Mod Squad.' He felt the show made a big difference because it was one of the first television series to address social issues such as drugs, prostitution and teen pregnancy that were more hush-hush before that time," said Barbara Andrews, one of the actor's six children.

Andrews appeared in several episodes of the ABC series that aired from 1968 to 1973. His daughter said he was proud of his stint as Capt. Adam Greer on the hit show. He also loved "working with 'the kids,'" which was how he always referred to the TV drama's three young stars
