TORONTO, Canada -- Singer and songwriter Denny Doherty, a member of the hit 1960's vocal group, The Mamas and the Papas, died on Friday, January 19 at his home near Toronto after a short illness, according to his sister, Frances Arnold. Doherty had suffered kidney problems following surgery last month and had been put on dialysis, she said. He was 66.

The Mamas and The Papas had six Top 10 hits in a two-year career that strongly influenced the "California sound" of the '60s and '70s, starting with their first top 10 smash, "California Dreamin'" in 1966. The Mamas and The Papas broke new ground by having women and men in one group at a time when most singing groups were unisex.

On the masculine side, the Los Angeles-based quartet was made up of Doherty and John Phillips, the group's chief songwriter. Completing their distinctive sound were female vocalists Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips, married at that time to fellow group member, John Phillips.
