Quill Awards Host NBC News Lester Holt

NEW YORK, New York -- The Quill Awards pair a populist sensibility with Hollywood-style glitz and have become the first literary prizes to reflect the tastes of the group that matters most in publishing . . . readers. It's the first awards program to honor excellence in publishing and include consumers in the voting process.

Returning in its second year, The Quill Awards will be presented on Tuesday, October 10, during a gala ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. NBC will air The Quill Awards on Saturday, October 28. NBC News' Lester Holt will host this years ceremony. Caroline Kennedy will receive the first Platinum Quill Award. The Quills Corporate Literacy Award will be given to Target.

For the first time, the Quills will also have an exclusive presence on MSNBC.com. In addition to being a main source for consumer voting, MSNBC.com will create and feature unique content about the Quills online and increase national coverage of the show by providing a Live Stream on October 28, 2006.

The Quills is designed to be an industry qualified "consumers choice" awards program for books, honoring the current titles readers deem most entertaining and enlightening. The Quills celebrates the best books of the year in nineteen popular categories, ranging from romance to biography to graphic novels.

The Quill Awards were established to:

  • Celebrate Excellence in Writing and Publishing

  • Recognize and praise the creators of important books and great literature

  • Interest more consumers in acquiring books and reading

  • Act as a bellwether for literacy initiatives
