TV movie about a short Basketball player

Recommended Posts

This one has been bugging me off and on for years.

A coupla times, I've searched the net to find more info, but nada.

So I wanted to see if any of your brains has the info.

A long, long time ago, (probably around the early 80s), I watched a movie on TV about a short (like 5-foot) white guy who became a basketball star (not sure if just college ball or the pros). Also not sure if this was a made-for-TV movie or a real movie just being shown on TV, but it was a drama, not a comedy.

I remember really enjoying the movie, but the only scene I can really kinda recall is one where he gets pulled over (for speeding?) by the cops on the way to the big game - and instead of giving him a ticket, the cop gives him a police escort. I think part of the plot revolved around him getting hooked on drugs and family problems (and girl trouble, of course) and having to overcome all that.

I wouldn't mind seeing the movie again, but without more info, that's never going to happen.

So if anyone remembers anything about this, answer back even if you might be wrong.

Thanks.

I don't know for sure the name of your movie. I do know that Tyrone Muggsy Bogues was the smallest player thus far in NBA history, standing 5'1" and weighing 136 pounds. He played four years at Wake Forest. He was drafted in 1987 NBA draft by the Washington Bullets. He has played for the Heat and 10 years for the Charlotte Hornets.

Muggsy wrote a book "In the Land of Giants: My Life in Basketball" about his life ( GREAT READ). I am unsure if it was made into a movie. But some of what you described sounds like excerpts from his book. Muggsy was from Baltimore and was a highschool star.

Was it possibly "The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend"?

They said he was too short. They said he was a misfit. They said he didn't know how to play basketball. Pete Maravich knew better. His father had taught him that with discipline, dedication, desire and confidence, he could achieve any dream. Pet Maravich's dream was to become one of basketball's greatest legends. The Pistol is the uplifting and inspirational story of how he started to make his dream come true. It was a dream that propelled him to become the youngest inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Pete Maravich played with the determination of a champion. He revolutionized the game of basketball. He showed how family, hard work, and a whole lot of heart could make anything possible.
