That is the problem with the Veto - it is either one or the other.

In BB3 and BB4 (to a lesser extent thanks to Alison) the Veto wasn't used that often.

From BB5 it was cut down to six players and became used more often - but once it becomes used virtually weekly it makes a mockery of the nominations.

BB6 especially had the problem of Back Dooring, where the main way of evicting people came to be not actually nominating them!

They kind of got around that a bit this year with the random Veto selections, and I've made suggestions in the past which could help, for example beginning with a $1m jackpot which falls by $100,000 everytime the Veto is used, which IMO would bring a new element to the show and make using the Veto a much more difficult choice.

The Veto should stay - it just needs tweaking a bit.

A couple of ideas:

Instead of weekly competitions each week one housemate would be randomly selected to secretly complete the "Veto mission". If they pass they win the power of Veto and can use it to save a nominee, but if they fail they will automatically be nominated for eviction with the HoH having to remove a nominee from the block.

Another idea is the Double Veto. Each week there are two Veto winners who both have the power to save a nominee. They make their decisions privately in the diary room - but there is a twist. If they both use their power to save the nominees then they become the nominees themselves!

My final idea (for now) is the Veto Duel. Each week just two houseguests compete to win the Power of Veto, with the HoH and nominees unable to compete. The first competitor is decided by the HoH, with the second chosen by the houseguests themselves (or it could even by via America's Choice).

The two competitors then go head to head in the Veto challenge. The winner gets the Veto, while I think the loser should be penalised - either by being unable to compete in the next Veto duel - or even better being the automatic replacement should the Veto be used (as that would make it much tougher for the HoH/HGs to decide who should take part).

Actually I think the Veto Duel idea could work quite well!

I am all for new houseguest that have NEVER been in the public eye before. With that said, I do think it wold be funny to let 14 Survivor players be on BB, and 14 BB houseguest be on Survivor. The BB players would be begging for slop, and the Survivor players would think they were on vacation. I bet the ratings would be through the roof.

I'd like to adjust this idea just a bit. The amount is $50,000.00 subtracted BUT each individual starts at the $1,000,000 prize. If they break various rules, various amounts are subtracted from THEIR total. We saw this work GREAT with the cemetary competition. Did they want Janelle out? YES, but were too greedy about their own prizes they would RATHER win prizes. The cemetary was the BEST Veto competition this year because it really made you decide what you want more, someone out NOW or LATER and prizes! Singing = -$10,000, Talking about DR sessions = -$10,000. By the end of the game, they would still probably end up with about a 500,000 prize for everyone, LOL. Veto can cost $50,000.00 only if they don't use it on themselves!

BTW, a source tells me CBS IS reading this post so write respectively guys.

Australia do the rule breaking thing - the problem with doing it in the US version is you haven't got "Big Brother" there to tell them off.

It could be done collectively (individually is unneccesarily complex IMO) with a screen in the house displaying the figure and a claxon going off when a rule is broke. Each week then the HoH could read out a list of the penalties.

And the point about them being greedy - that is the point. It's a test of character which grows as the numbers dwindle.

P.S. Giving the HoH immunity the week after being HoH would be too much. You have to accept that revenge is part of the risk of being HoH - hence why throwing competitions is a reasonable strategy.

What about this?

Earlier this season, someone posted about a comp they had on one of the foreign BB's. I think it was the British version. In this comp, the HG's had to stop water leaking from a huge container. I think it was a 2 or 3 day deal (sorry, I am going on memory here). There were 2 people on duty at all times and they had to use various body parts (but not fingers? (not sure on that one) ) to plug the holes that opened up. If they were successful....I really don;t know what happened.

But, I like the idea of more endurance type comps that involve something more than who can stand and hold their finger on a button, for only their benefit.

What if they did these types of comps, where you did not get to pick who you would be stuck with hours at a time? What if the viewers got to choose pairings? What if the pairings were random draw? What if there was an automatic penalty nom if the task was lost while you were on watch? What if the final prize was reduced if you failed? etc....

BB1 did this with a dance competition. It lasted 72 hours and for those 72 hours, 2 HG's had to be dancing and at least had to have one hand holding the other persons, the entire time. Now, dancing was kinda lame, it turned into "leaning and weaving" by the end, but it worked.

But, if they came up with challenges like this that actually required the HG's to stay alert, and if the HG's had no control over who they would be paired with for hours at a time, imagine the secret alliances that could be formed. If nothing else, it might get HG's who normally would not interact, to at least start talking.

I dunno, but more stuff where the HG's have to interact and rely on each other, would maybe take away a bit from this "it's all about me" attitude. In order to win, you HAVE to be willing to do the dirty, painful, unpleasant work of actually working alongside for your fellow HG's towards a common goal.

Does this make sense? DAMN, it is late and I am wayyyy too tired to be posting :)

Both the UK and Aussie versions did this competition (in order to win the week's food budget), though the UK added the twist of having someone secretly sabotage it as the real task.

These type of comps are a standard feature of most international versions and there is no reason why they couldn't be used occassionally in the US version.

Remember BB was slotted for a couple of more years.Personally although it's a sweet thought I'd skip a BB loaded with your average housewife & old Joe.For me some of the most dull players were exactly those people.I didn't mind an all star because watching Will in action again made it worth it.He and people like Nicole from his season make BB interesting.Best to stick with people that are deep and quirkey in character.(eccentric,funny,temperamental,OCD,etc.)Look at Nakomis. Her tats, name & hair alone freaked the other HG's out AND they underestimated her because they were too busy oogling her colors in her first season.

This was my first no feed season as well. We'll see how BB8 goes BEFORE they get my $$$$$$$!!!!!!

Another idea for a twist to the Veto.

As well as picking partners, the HGs compete as pairs to win the Veto. All HGs compete, though if there is an odd number one HG will sit out (and perhaps claim the Veto if no one wins it).

The HoH and nominees each pick partners, with the remaining HMs then paired up. The pair that wins the competition wins the Veto - and the power to save one nominee from eviction.

There is a catch though - if the Veto winners can't agree on how to use the Veto, they will replace the nominees on the block.

(Like the double HoH though, it's unlikely that would happen!).

After digging around on the CBS website, my computer (for season 1) and my computers calendar to get the days of the week I've come up with all the start dates for the previous episodes. As well as a possible start date for this year's show.

Season 1 : Wednesday July 5th, 2000

Season 2 : Friday July 6th, 2001

Season 3 : Wednesday July 10th, 2002

Season 4 : Tuesday July 8th, 2003

Season 5 : Tuesday July 6th, 2004

Season 6 : Thursday July 7th, 2005

Season 7 : Thursday July 6th, 2006

Therefore I've come to conclude that this year's start date will most likely be on Thursday July 5th. If this is indeed the case March 27th will mark the 100 days before mark.

Let's hope we hear something more conclusive soon.

I would like to hear your thoughts.

I hope this year they go back to having 4 shows before the first eviction, rather than 3.

It's become a bit rushed lately with the first HoH and nominations in show 1 - I think it's better how they used to do it, having a food comp in the premiere and then ending that with the first HoH. Show 2 would be the luxury comp (Hot Tub) and noms, then the Veto in show 3 before the eviction in show 4.

I agree that the show feels too rushed. Big Brother 3 had about 6 whole episodes before they evicted Lori. With the new seasons, you barely even get to figure out the persons name and before you know it, they're gone!

I also believe the season 8 premiere date will be July 5. I already have a countdown going!

Yep - same thing applies at the end of the season. A "double eviction week" is fine as a one-off twist, but in the last few years it's just been a case of having too many HMs to get rid of in the last few weeks, so we get about six weeks truncated into two.

Therefore they need to cut back the number of HMs again - 13 was about right IMO.
