Reality Television Is Hot This Summer

May 24, 2006

Remember the olden days of television? There was little new content for the summer, thus we had to be content to watch repeats with the exception of a few variety shows. An example of summer fare was The Summer Smothers Brothers Show circa the late sixties. There were other beach-related shows, too. But, that was about it. Mostly, television was reruns all through the lazy, hazy days of summer.

In the current TV market, networks compete with each other for viewers, and for the even more important advertising dollars. In scouting around for this year's summer shows, I found it to be a Summer of Reality TV more often than not. So, if you're not a reality television genre fan, you might end up with reruns or feel free to accompany your child to summer camp!

Now, this is by no means a complete list of all the new summer shows (and returning ones) for the season, but I took a look at the big networks to see the major players in the market.

On CBS this summer:

Of course, there's my guilty pleasure summer staple, Big Brother. This year, BB7 is being called Big Brother All-Stars. Mark Wednesday, June 21 on your calendar as the CBS website has this blurb posted:

For the first time in BIG BROTHER history worldwide, viewers will vote on which former HouseGuests will compete in BIG BROTHER 7: ALL-STARS. On CBS Wednesday, June 21 at 8PM ET/PT, Julie Chen will unveil the top 20 candidates from seasons past. Web voting opens right here [CBS.com site] after the show at midnight ET/9PM PT. The polls close Wednesday, June 28 at 11:59PM ET/8:59PM PT

On Thursday, July 6 at 8 PM ET/PT, it's the season premiere.

RockStar: Supernova will premiere on Wednesday, July 5 at 8 PM ET/PT. The second episode will be shown after the season premiere of Big Brother All-Stars the next day, then the regular day and time will be Wednesdays at 8 PM ET/PT. This is the second season for the show; last year's band was INXS. This season a new band (Supernova) will be formed with the winner accompanying former Motley Cr

NBC, 'Grease' Go Together

Midseason show will pick cast members for revival

August 8 2006

NBC, already fulfilling the Vegas dreams of many a performer with "America's Got Talent," will try to pave a path to Broadway with a show scheduled for midseason.

Tell you more, tell you more? OK.

The show will be called "You're the One That We Want," and it will seek to find a Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski for a revival of "Grease" that opens next June, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the show's Broadway debut. Beauty school dropouts may apply, but presumably a background in musical theater would be helpful too.

"The winning appeal of 'Grease' and its timeless score and storyline extends across all generations and will make for a fantastic series," says Craig Plestis, NBC's alternative-programming chief. "Americans have grown up with these catchy tunes and appealing characters, and we think they'll love the chance to select the next dynamic duo to play Sandy and Danny."

The show will put its contestants through a "Grease"-y televised audition, with viewers ultimately deciding who gets to play Sandy and Danny. The musical's co-creator, Jim Jacobs, revival director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall ("The Pajama Game," "Little Shop of Horrors") and producer David Ian will serve as judges.

"Grease" opened on Broadway in June 1972 after stints in Chicago and off-Broadway and ran for close to 3,400 performances, a record at the time. The 1978 movie version, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, is the highest-grossing movie musical ever and also spawned a mega-selling soundtrack.

Jimmy Kimmel Named Host Of Set For Life

Jimmy Kimmel, host of the late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live," is tapped to host the new primetime game show "Set for Life," premiering later this season on the ABC Television Network. "I tried to tell ABC that it is too difficult to do a talk show every night and an hour-long primetime show too," Jimmy Kimmel said. "Unfortunately, there's a 75-year-old man named Regis who seems to have no problem with it."

"We're thrilled to have Jimmy join 'Set for Life' as the host," said Andrea Wong, executive vice president, Alternative Programming, Specials & Late-Night for ABC-TV. "He brings a unique voice to the show along with intelligence, great comedic talent and an irreverence that's bound to make the experience memorable for the contestants and the audience."

"Jimmy Kimmel is the perfect choice to host 'Set for Life,'" said David Goldberg, president of Endemol USA. "He's got a great everyman quality that is as funny as it is relatable, and beyond that he's just a huge talent who naturally connects with his audience. He brings all of the intangibles that we look for when hiring a host, and then some. We are delighted to announce this news."

In the unpredictable, innovative new game show, "Set for Life" contestants have the opportunity to win a monthly payout for the rest of their lives. The contestants will never know if they have won or lost a fortune until their isolated partner joins them on stage at the end of the game.

In addition to his work on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Kimmel co-created and executive-produces "Crank Yankers," which was recently picked up for a fifth season by MTV2, and "The Andy Milonakis Show," recently picked up for a third season by MTV2. Kimmel co-hosted Comedy Central's "The Man Show" for four seasons, served as on-air prognosticator for "Fox NFL Sunday" for four years, and for four seasons co-hosted Comedy Central's long-running and popular game show, "Win Ben Stein's Money." Kimmel received two Emmy nominations for his work with Ben Stein and won Best Game Show Host in 1999.

Kimmel's company, "Jackhole Industries," formed with partners Daniel Kellison and Adam Carolla, is responsible for "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "The Man Show," "Crank Yankers," "The Andy Milonakis Show" and the feature film "Windy City Heat," set for release on DVD September 26th, 2006. Kimmel also serves as creative consultant to Adam Carolla's nationally syndicated morning radio show.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Las Vegas, NV, Kimmel began his career in morning radio and rose to prominence as "Jimmy the Sports Guy" on KROQ'S "Kevin and Bean Show."

"Set for Life" is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is the president of Endemol USA. The series is executive-produced by Scott St. John.

New York, NY - October 23, 2006 - Todd Oldham, world-renowned designer, has been named the host of Bravo's all-new interior design competition series "Top Design." Three judges have been chosen to critique and celebrate each "Top Design," including lead judge Jonathan Adler, who will be joined by Margaret Russell, Editor In Chief of ELLE DECOR Magazine, and interior designer Kelly Wearstler. FOX Moves 'Lot' Premiere Date

First audition will air after Tuesday 'Idol' finale, not the penultimate episode

March 20, 2007

Steven Spielberg

FOX has pushed the season premiere of the summer series "On the Lot" back a week, given the filmmaking drama a different "American Idol" launching pad.

Originally set to premiere with a one-hour audition episode on Wednesday, May 16, "On the Lot" will instead have a two-hour, two-night audition premiere one week later.

The initial plan was to have the Mark Burnett/Steven Spielberg produced reality offering launch out of the penultimate "American Idol" episode and then take two weeks off before starting its regular schedule on May 28. Under the new schedule, "On the Lot" will premiere after the first part of the "American Idol" finale on Tuesday, May 22 at 9 p.m. ET. A second hour of auditions will air on Thursday, May 24 at 9 p.m. after the season premiere audition episode of "So You Think You Can Dance."

"Steven and I are enormously thrilled with the response we've had to the call for film submissions via our website thelot.com," Burnett says. "This confirms our notion that there is an incredible amount of talented filmmakers in the world looking for their big breaks. We are very excited that our partners at FOX have scheduled the launch of this series with the powerhouse 'American Idol' finale and the premiere of 'So You Think You Can Dance.' Coming off of the success of 'Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?', launching out of 'American Idol' is a terrific move."

"On the Lot" will have a two-hour "Film Premiere" episode on Monday, May 28, introducing the 16 finalists and their first films. The next night, in an hour-long "Box Office" results show, beginning at 8 p.m., four finalists will be eliminated. Monday, June 4 will make the first regularly scheduled 9 p.m. "Film Premiere" episode with the first half-hour results show the next evening.

FOX claims to have received 12,000 video submissions from aspiring filmmakers. The show's eventual winner receives a $1 million DreamWorks development deal.

Released by Bravo

[NOTE: The following article is a press release issued by the aforementioned network and/or company. Any errors, typos, etc. are attributed to the original author. The release is reproduced solely for the dissemination of the enclosed information.]

Bravo Has 'The Affluencer:' Most Affluent, Influential, Engaged and Educated Viewers

Record Year in 2006 Record First Quarter in 2007

NEW YORK April 11, 2007 Coming off a record-breaking 2006, followed by a record-breaking first quarter 2007, Bravo announced today as part of its Upfront strategy an additional night of original programming on Thursday nights in 2007; a shift in sales focus on the A18-49 targeted demographic from the A25-54 demo; and a robust slate of new and returning programming. The announcements were made by Lauren Zalaznick, President, Bravo and Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President Programming and Production, Bravo.

In 2006, the "Watch What Happens" network saw 10 different program series each top the one million viewer mark, and with new, original online content driving growth of www.BravoTV.com, page views increased by triple digits (361 million 06 vs. 164 million 05, up +120%). Bravo attracts the No. 1 most affluent, educated, and engaged viewers A18-49, who are among the most influential buzz-generators on cable 'The Affluencers,' a new word coined by Bravo (see attached jpeg files) and brings those avid, pop-culture obsessed consumers to the Upfront marketplace. (Sourcing below).

"Coming off our best year ever and our best first quarter ever, Bravo continues to thrive and attract viewers that are 'The Affluencers' -- they're young, rich, acquisitive, educated and influential, at the forefront of trends both in style and technology," said Zalaznick. "Our audience flocks to all our digital offerings, while their buzz-power simultaneously drives our on-air ratings."

Now in more than 84 million homes, Bravo continued its momentum as the No. 1 cable entertainment network in year-to-year primetime growth in 2006 (22% increase in A18-49) with a record-breaking 1Q07 (achieving a 19 percent primetime gain in A18-49 vs. 1Q06). Additionally, Bravo's online offerings continued to increase as the Bravo digital properties topped 103 million page views in 1Q07, representing a 40 percent increase over 1Q06 (103.3 million vs. 73.4 million). (Sourcing below).

Expanding to a third night of original programming this summer builds on Bravo's addictive slate of successful Tuesday night docu-dramas and Wednesday night competition reality originals that include "The Real Housewives of Orange County," "Work Out," "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List," "Project Runway," "Top Chef," "Top Design" and the spring series "Shear Genius" (premiering tonight, Wednesday, April 11).

"Bravo has successfully built hit series with a following of passionate viewers that can't get enough of our five affinity groups: fashion, food, design, beauty and pop culture," said Berwick. "With our originals now on Thursday nights, advertisers can tap into the Bravo viewer's strong consumer weekend interests going to movies, shopping and spending loads of money."

Following are the new and returning programming announcements:

A delight for all the senses, "Top Chef 3" features the most "seasoned" contestants yet, as well as special guest judges that include some of the culinary world's most renowned figures. Her career is on a roll and the comic is in better form then ever, which only serves up more challenges for the dog-tired Kathy, who must show more fortitude than ever to stay at the top of her game, as well as face some of life's bigger challenges and heartbreaks. The fly-on-the-wall series reveals the ups and downs of Abdul, not just as a celebrity, but as a business woman, producer, choreographer, singer and friend. Cameras follow Abdul as she develops her own perfume and cosmetics, expands her originally-designed jewelry line, markets her clothing and fits many personal appearances into a demanding schedule. "Hey Paula" is produced by Scott Sternberg Productions.

Premiere TBA

It takes a special kind of personality to handle flipping six multimillion-dollar houses at one time, but Jeff Lewis, an obsessive compulsive successful businessman, pulls it off and turns a six-figure profit on every property. Lewis may blow up every now and then and perhaps fire an employee or two, but he's aware of his "Flipping Out" tendencies and attempts to counteract them with therapy, spiritual healers, psychics, and the like. Whether it's turning over a house or a staff member, things are always flipping in Lewis' world. And each day comes with a new barrage of problems, from dealing with workers not showing up to the job site, to learning from his pet psychic that his cat, Monkey, needs some "alone time." With an intriguing cast of characters, living as one big dysfunctional family, there's never a dull moment on a "Flipping Out" project. "Flipping Out" is produced by Authentic Entertainment, with Lauren Lexton and Tom Rogan serving as executive producers.

Premiere TBA

Bravo pulls back the curtain on the culture of high-class hotels and takes a look at the unique personalities that work and play there. "Welcome to the Parker" takes viewers into the world of the luxurious Parker Palm Springs hotel, a chic estate known for laid-back relaxation. NBC Sets Summer Premieres

Returnees 'Last Comic,' 'Talent' join newbie 'Age of Love'

April 12, 2007

Bill Bellamy

NBC will bank on a set of returning shows, and one top-secret newcomer, to keep viewers around over the summer.

Starting right after Memorial Day, NBC will launch a summertime schedule that includes new seasons of "America's Got Talent" and "Last Comic Standing," with a dating show called "Age of Love" arriving for mid-June. The network will eventually have original programming on three nights of the week.

"The Biggest Loser" will also get a late-summer premiere, although an exact date hasn't been set.

"We have a strong hand to play this summer season with a proven stable of winning series from past summers," says Craig Plestis, head of alternative programming for NBC. "Each returning show will have a fresh look with new hosts, and the competitions on 'America's Got Talent,' 'Last Comic' and 'Biggest Loser' will be even bigger and better than before. Likewise, we like what we see with the new 'Age of Love,' which could prove to be the breakout hit of the summer."

"America's Got Talent" will be first out of the gate with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday, May 29, and will move to 8 p.m. Tuesdays the following week. New host Jerry Springer will lead viewers in the search for the country's next great stage act, be they singers, dancers, jugglers or what have you.

The show's performance episodes averaged 11 million viewers last year. Results shows didn't do quite as well but still pulled in a respectable 8.7 million viewers each time out.

The fifth edition of "Last Comic Standing," with new host Bill Bellamy, premieres Wednesday, June 13. The show has broadened its search for undiscovered comic talent and will feature comedians from Canada, England and Australia as well as the United States. The show drew 8.1 million viewers a week last year.

NBC is keeping details about "Age of Love" under wraps. We know it's a dating show, we know it's hosted by Mark Consuelos ("All My Children") and we know it premieres Monday, June 18.

Twelve celebrity drivers will partner with the Gillette Young Guns - six of stock car racing's most talented and popular drivers - to learn what it takes to win on the race track.

The show will explore the interaction of top young stock car drivers with stars from the world of sports, music and entertainment, featuring drama and competition on and off the race track. In each episode, viewers will watch celebrities train with a Gillette Young Guns driver. The show will culminate in a one-hour finale where the celebrities will be coached from the pits by their Gillette Young Guns instructors and compete against each other during a time-trial race.

"I jumped at the chance to be involved in the Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race," said actor William Shatner. "It's every American boy's dream to get behind the wheel of a stock car."

"Fast Cars & Superstars - The Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race" will include six half-hour episodes with an hour-long finale. "I hope these celebrities are ready to feel the real power of a stock car," said Jimmie Johnson, the reigning NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion and member of the Gillette Young Guns. "We're all really excited to share our knowledge of competitive racing to coach these stars. We'll see who has what it takes to be the Champion."

CBS Uncages 'Creature Comforts' in June

Animated series will air on Monday nights

April 18, 2007

'Creature Comforts'

The American version of the Aardman Animation smash "Creature Comforts" will finally have its premiere this summer on CBS.

The network announced on Wednesday (April 18) that "Creature Comforts" will premiere on Monday, June 4.

As was the case with the original British commercials, short film and ITV1 series, the American "Creature Comforts" will combine audio interviews with ordinary citizens with stop-motion animation of anthropomorphic animals.

Nick Park won an Oscar for the short film, long before the unique Aardman style became familiar to American audiences on films like "Chicken Run" and "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit."

CBS has had "Creature Comforts" in development for some time. The network announced last February that the show was going into production on seven episodes, but due to the labor-intensive process, it was always intended for a midseason 2006-07 slot.

Booty Call: CBS' 'Pirate' Sets Sail in May

Some salty dog named Cameron Daddo will host, mateys

April 18, 2007

'Pirate Master' host Cameron Daddo

CBS has set a Thursday, May 31 premiere date for "Pirate Master," a summer reality series from "Survivor" mastermind Mark Burnett. The show will air through the summer on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET.

On "Pirate Master," 16 contestants will live aboard a 179-food, square-rigged barque. Over the course of 33 days, they'll live as buccaneers, traveling around a Caribbean island in search of a treasure totaling $1 million. Each episode will find the contestants gathering at Pirate's Court, where they'll state their case and somebody will be cut adrift.

"'Pirate Master' breaks new ground in that it's the collision of fantasy and reality," Burnett says. "This is a show where, in true pirate fashion, anything can happen with a group of people that live by their own set of rules and usually break them. It's adventure, excitement and loads of treasure. Anyone who ever wanted to be a pirate will love this show!"

The winner will be the first contestant to find the largest booty, a treasure worth $500,000.

With all of this emphasis on big booty, one might guess Sir Mix-a-Lot would be the perfect host. Instead, the host will be Australian actor Cameron Daddo, who may be familiar from films including "Big Mamma's House 2" and TV appearances on shows like "Boston Legal" and "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."

American Idol Producers Launch Search For The Next Great American Band

In all the drama of Lakisha Jones being eliminated from American Idol, it overshadowed a major announcement made by Ryan Seacrest during the show. American Idol producers are apparently launching a brand new reality show to search for the next great American band.

During the American Idol results show, Ryan Seacrest pointed out that Barry Gibb said that the four American Idol finalists should perform together as a group. Seacrest then said that was interesting because they were actually looking for a band. Seacrest then played a clip that said American Idol producers were looking for the best undiscovered group in America.

In the clip was an address where bands could send their DVDs and videos. The address was The Band Show Casting, 8391 Beverly Blvd, PMB #464, Los Angeles, CA 90048. On the official American Idol website there is more information that spells out that the band must have at least two members and include some form of musical instruments. Application and release forms along with detailed instructions on what should go in the band

NBC Tackles 'Age'-Old Question

Dating show puts guy between women in 20s, 40s

May 10, 2007

Mark Consuelos

The show is called "Age of Love," and until now NBC has kept its premise a secret. No more, though.

The dating show, which premieres Monday, June 18, will test the veracity of dozens of newspaper and magazine trend stories and see whether a guy in his early 30s will fall for an older woman -- when there are younger women available as well.

If you're a tennis fan, you may have heard of the guy in question: 31-year-old Mark Philippoussis, a one-time Wimbledon finalist whose love life has been tabloid fodder in his native Australia. Injuries have sidelined him for extended periods in recent years, but he's hoping to make a comeback on the men's tour this year.

In the show, a group of women in their 20s -- the "Kittens" -- will move into one floor of an L.A. high-rise. Another set of women in their 40s -- the "Cougars" -- will be on a higher floor, with Philippoussis in between. Philippoussis is initially unaware of the concept at first, knowing only that he's going to be on a dating show.

Host Mark Consuelos ("All My Children") will introduce him to the 40-something women first, with the women in their 20s joining the game a little later. Weekly eliminations will pare the field to the one woman Philippoussis likes the most.

"Age of Love" comes from "Biggest Loser" producer JD Roth, who says the idea sprung from conversations he's had with his wife's female friends.

"I always listen to what the wives are talking about because they're always reading every magazine, watching 'Oprah,'" he told reporters recently. "So they're all talking about how they could get a guy [who's] 25, no problem. They're all around 40. ...

"The next thing you know the conversation is about Ashton and Demi, and 'He really loves her. They have a connection. There's a chemistry there. It's not about age.' Then you see Katie Couric with a guy 20 years younger. When you start talking about what's going on in pop culture, you realize there is no age of love."
