'The Da Vinci Code' (May 19)

The Story: Dan Brown's monster best-seller gets underway with an especially grotesque murder in the Louvre, of all places, right in front of Leonardo da Vinci's celebrated masterpiece featuring the lady with the enigmatic smile. Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is thrown into uneasy alliance with a Gallic codebreaker named Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), a doe-eyed girl who has a surprising role to play in the mystery. The mystery involves not only the whodunit and whydunit of the murder but the history -- and just maybe the future -- of the Christian faith.

The Skinny: The "Code'"s intricate symbolism and endlessly complicated implications are fascinating, and now you get to play the game without slogging through Brown's hack-level prose, and in the excellent company of Jean Reno (ideally cast as Inspector Bezu Fache), Ian McKellen (Sir Leigh Teabing), Alfred Molina (Bishop Aringarosa), Paul Bettany (the albino Silas) and J
