Jamie Kennedy in 'Son of the Mask'

LOS ANGELES, California - Bad sequels and remakes tortured movie audiences last year, and they provided a smorgasbord for the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that pays heed to the worst in Hollywood. Razzies will be announced Saturday, March 4, the day before the Oscars.

Four of the five Worst Picture nominees for the Razzies were sequels or remakes, led by "Son of the Mask," which had eight nominations Monday, including Worst Actor for Jamie Kennedy and Supporting Actor for Alan Cumming and Bob Hoskins.

The other Worst Picture contenders were Rob Schneider's sequel "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo," Jenny McCarthy's raunchy romance "Dirty Love," the TV update "The Dukes of Hazzard" and the horror remake "House of Wax."

Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning in 'War of the Worlds'

Tom Cruise earned three Razzie nominations, as Worst Actor for "War of the Worlds" and two of the five slots in a new Razzies category for Most Tiresome Tabloid Targets. Cruise was nominated there for his anti-psychiatry rant and for his very public romance with Katie Holmes.

"He had been a very private person up until this past year," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "It certainly was a bizarre turn in terms of how he handles his personal life and the access that he gave the media to himself. The endless posing on the red carpet and just smooching like they were on the couch at home."

"Son of the Mask," a flop that starred Kennedy as a new father whose son is born with the shape-shifting powers showcased in Jim Carrey's original 1994 movie, was an early Razzies favorite when it came out nearly a year ago.

As Wilson was preparing for last year's Razzies ceremony, his family went to see "Son of the Mask." "I was working on the script for last year's show, and they got home and my son stuck his head in the door and said, 'Dad, we've got one for next year,'" Wilson said.

Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell in 'Bewitched'

Besides Cruise and Kennedy, Worst Actor nominees were Will Ferrell for "Bewitched" and "Kicking & Screaming," The Rock for "Doom" and Schneider for "Deuce Bigalow." McCarthy earned three nominations for "Dirty Love," for Worst Actress, Screenplay and Screen Couple (she and 'anyone dumb enough to befriend or date her').

Her Worst Actress competitors: Jessica Alba for "Fantastic Four" and "Into the Blue," Hilary Duff for "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" and "The Perfect Man," Jennifer Lopez for "Monster-in-Law" and Tara Reid for "Alone in the Dark."

Paris Hilton received two nominations, Worst Supporting Actress for "House of Wax" and Most Tiresome Tabloid Target. Holmes also was nominated for Worst Supporting Actress for "Batman Begins," along with Carmen Electra for "Dirty Love" and the Simpson sisters, Jessica for "The Dukes of Hazzard" and Ashlee for "Undiscovered."

'TomKat' Merits Special Razzie Award

Together, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise rate a Razzie Award

And the losers are? Tom Cruise and his fiance Katie Holmes. Cruise who starred in last year's blockbuster hit, "War of the Worlds" and his pregnant partner Holmes won the Razzie award on Saturday, March 4 for the new Razzie category of "most tiresome tabloid targets."

The Razzies, which parody self-congratulatory Hollywood award shows such as the Oscars by roasting the worst of Tinseltown, this year added the "most tiresome" category to salute "the celebs we're ALL sick and tired of." The couple, known as TomKat, won for their tabloid dominance.

Cruise professed his love for the actress on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last May where he jumped up and down on a sofa like a man possessed. Cruise's behavior spawned the slang "jump the couch," meaning the moment when you know someone has gone off the deep end, or as one Razzie presenter put it, "the day when his rabies vaccine ran out."

Cruise then proposed to Holmes in June in Paris and announced their engagement at a news conference, prompting talk it was all a publicity stunt to promote their summer films. Razzie presenters joked in Hollywood jargon about Holmes' pregnancy, calling it "their first collaboration to go into pre-production."

"As guarded, not necessarily secretive, but as private about his personal life as he used to be, for him to suddenly propose in front of reporters on the Eiffel Tower and jump up and down like the monkey in 'Curious George' on Oprah Winfrey's couch, there truly is some problem there," said Razzies founder John Wilson.

Cruise, a member of the Church of Scientology which eschews psychiatry, was also roasted for his attack on psychiatry and anti-depressant drugs made on NBC's "Today" show last June. Cruise, like other winners at Saturday's ceremony, "couldn't be here tonight to accept the award."

Halle Berry accepts her 2004 worst actress Razzie Award in person

for 'Catwoman' and brings along her little friend, Oscar

Many celebrities shy away from such an honor in person with the exception of previous 2004 worst actress Razzie award winner, Halle Berry. Berry showed a sense of humor about herself when she won for "Catwoman" and attended the evenings festivities that year holding her 2002 Oscar in one hand while accepting her Razzie in the other.

Berry thanked the makers of "Catwoman" for "putting me in a God-awful movie" when she turned up to collect her Razzie award. Making a surprise appearance got her a standing ovation from a packed house where the actress told the crowd, "It was just what my career needed - I was at the top and now I'm at the bottom," she said.

Berry made a lengthy acceptance speech and parodied her sobbing during her 2002 Oscar win while brandishing her Oscar and Razzie - a small gold raspberry. She said she turned up in person because she had been told as a child by her mother: "If you aren't able to be a good loser you're not able to be a good winner."

Director John Asher badly directs ex-wife Jenny McCarthy

"How bad a year did Hollywood have?" founder John Wilson asked in his opening monologue. "To hear them tell it, only the residents of Baghdad, the residents of New Orleans and one particular resident of Crawford, Texas, had a worse year in 2005 than the folks of Tinseltown."

By far the worst movie of the year was "Dirty Love," a movie written by and starring former Playboy model Jenny McCarthy, which took four honors. Billed by its producers as a "modern day Cinderella story," the movie grossed just $58,116 and was drubbed by critics.

It won worst picture and McCarthy won worst actress and worst screenplay. McCarthy's former husband, John Mallory Asher, won worst director at the mock movie awards show in Hollywood. "Even by the standards of its bottom-feeding genre, 'Dirty Love' clings to the gutter like a rat in garbage," film critic Stephen Holden wrote in The New York Times.

Tom Green's 'Freddy Got Fingered' merits top honors as all time

Razzie Champ with eight nominations and five 'wins' in 2001

The movie, "Dirty Love," isn't the first husband-wife combination to misfire and earn a pair of Razzies. Winner of the 1984 worst picture Razzie, "Bolero" also earned a worst actress Razzie for Bo Derek and worst director for her husband, John Derek. Although these pairs tried their best to rate an all-time Razzie record, that achievement is still held by a trio of films: "Mommie Dearest," "Wild Wild West" and "Freddy Got Fingered."

Tom Green merits top honors as Razzie Champ for his vulgar-humored 2001 film, "Freddy Got Fingered." His cinematic disaster garnered eight nominations and five "wins" for worst picture, actor, screen couple, director and screenplay. Green was the first Razzie "winning" actor ever to attend a Razzie ceremony and accept his dis-honors in person.

Paris Hilton, described by the Razzies as being the "notorious air-headed heiress," won worst supporting actress for her death scene in "House of Wax." Hilton was named worst supporting actress for "House of Wax," a prize "I could have told you she would win as soon as I heard she was going to be in the movie," Wilson said.

wars_razzie.jpg

Hayden Christensen earned his worst supporting actor Razzie for

'Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith'

Hayden Christensen, who has won worst supporting actor once before for playing Anakin Skywalker, who grows up to be Darth Vader, won again for playing the same character in "Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith." "Darth Vader portrayed as a Backstreet Boy gone bad just doesn't cut it as a villain," Wilson said. "Though it was fun to see his arms and legs cut off."

Another multi-nominated star at this year's Razzie Awards, Tom Cruise was also in the running for the worst actor award but was trumped by Rob Schneider, the star of "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo." Rounding out the Razzies, "Son of the Mask" won worst sequel and Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman were worst screen couple for their "less-than-bewitching chemistry" in "Bewitched."

The Razzies are given by the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, which was formed to toast the worst of films, 24 hours before the Oscars tout the best. Despite a surfeit of awful films and dwindling box office takings, Wilson said, "The Academy of Motion Pictures Farts and Scientologists" would still give out Oscars on Sunday, March 5.
