FOX outlines plans for 'American Idol' spinoff

Thursday, December 1 2005, 16:40 GMT -- by Neil Wilkes

The FOX Reality Channel has confirmed plans to launch a companion show alongside the upcoming fifth season of American Idol.

The format is likely to be similar to that of the well-established spinoff shows from the UK, combining behind-the-scenes footage with interviews and other original content.

In addition, the channel will replay season four in its entirety in the run-up to the premiere of season five on the broadcast network next month.

The spinoff show is likely to air in a Thursday slot from March following the conclusion of the auditions phase of the competition.

These spin-off shows on spin-off channels are pretty much standard in the UK with almost all reality shows, usually involving interviews with celebrity fans, unseen footage, viewer phone-ins and interviews with the contestants, the latest person voted out and in the case of Idol, with the judges.

It began here with Big Brother's Little Brother, but Pop Idol wasn't far behind with Pop Idol Extra, typhically airing a show previewing the week's live show, a show following the live show and a show following the results.
