"The palace is not commenting, since these are the private affairs of the prince," spokeswoman Christiane Stahl said of reports that Albert will acknowledge paternity of a 14-year-old American. The Wednesday edition of the tabloid Le Parisien carried a large front-page photo of the girl it identified as Jazmin Grace, with her mother in California. The newspaper blurred the girl's face. Albert had a brief affair with the mother, former waitress Tamara Rotolo, in 1991 when she vacationed on the Cote d'Azur, the newspaper claimed, quoting the authors of a new book. Never married, the 48-year-old ruler unblushingly acknowledged last July that he fathered a son, Alexandre, out of wedlock with a former Togolese flight attendant. The child, now 3, will never take the throne and will not bear the Grimaldi family name. Last year, Albert told The New York Times that other women had made similar claims. "I don't know of any others that could be true," he said. He denied he had paid money to Rotolo. Rotolo made a paternity claim shortly after the child was born, he told the Times, but after a U.S. court dismissed the case, he thought the matter had gone away. Since the story of Alexandre hit the media, though, he said she had contacted his lawyer again. The lawyer was unavailable Wednesday afternoon for immediate comment, his office said. And recently Prince Albert introduced his girlfriend Charlene Wittstock to the Monaco establishment, when he escorted her to a glitzy reception where she met the principality's minister of state Jean-Paul Proust. Following the South African swimmer's appearance at such a high profile event, speculation is mounting that the 48-year-old Monegasque sovereign will announce his long-awaited engagement. Charlene - who got to know the prince in 2001 when they went on a date in Monte Carlo - was recently reported to have had an audience with the Archbishop of Monaco, Bernard Barsi. The elegant blonde was also apparently seen picking out a ring at a famous jeweller's with one of Albert's aides by her side. So far the palace has refused to comment on the rumours. Albert has always said he would not be pressured into marrying to satisfy those eager to see the Grimaldi succession issue resolved. Charlene and her prince have a love of sport in common.
