'Ugly Betty' Gets a New Beau
Freddy Rodriguez set to play love interest
July 13, 2007
For someone allegedly "Ugly," Betty Suarez sure has a lot of men in her life.
And come next season, she'll have one more to juggle. According to several media outlets, former "Six Feet Under" star Freddy Rodriguez will join the ABC show in the fall as a potential love interest for Betty (America Ferrera).
He'll be playing a character named Gio, who runs a sandwich cart in the Mode offices and takes a shine to the plucky assistant. Like Betty, he comes from a blue-collar background but has grander ambitions. What that might mean for the relationship between Betty and co-worker Henry (Christopher Gorham) remains to be seen.
Rodriguez was nominated for an Emmy in 2002 for his work on HBO's "Six Feet Under," where he played undertaker Federico Diaz. He recently appeared in Robert Rodriguez's portion of "Grindhouse," "Lady in the Water" and an episode of "ER" last season.
His other credits include "Poseidon," "Bobby," "Can't Hardly Wait" and a recurring part on "Scrubs."

"They don't plan to have her back for more episodes," says a high-level insider. "And they are cutting her out of the episodes they have already shot."
According to my sources, the main driving force for this decision is that Lindsay was not gelling creatively with the series. "She was not so interested in creating a character," another reliable insider close to Betty tells me. "She was more interested in just playing herself, and that doesn't work on a show like this with such heightened reality."

Nikki Blonsky may have just made headlines for her public airport scuffle, but she's already stirring up trouble again — this time, on Ugly Betty.
The Hairspray star has been filming a guest role for the ABC series, Access Hollywood says, in which she'll play an assistant at Mode's rival magazine, Elle. Blonsky's character will befriend Betty — but she might have ulterior motives in mind. It's her first role on prime time television.
Blonsky's episode will air before the end of the year, with no official word yet on whether her guest gig might evolve into a bigger arc. The actress is the latest on Betty's roster of celeb guests, including Lindsay Lohan, Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham and Lucy Liu.
Is this high-profile guest appearance an attempt to patch up Blonsky's public image? Or just a run-of-the-mill step in the actress' career?

Multiple sources report that Daniel Eric Gold (Charlie Wilson's War) has been cast in the recurring role of Matt, a seemingly Henry-esque hottie with whom Betty meets at YETI (Young Editors' Training Initiative).
Betty producers have big plans for Betty and Matt. The kind of big plans that led them to include a series regular option in Gold's just-inked contract.
The burning question: What does this mean for Betty's current crush, Jesse? I'm guessing it means he bought himself a one-way ticket to the doghouse when he decided to suck face with Amanda. Having said that, there is no confirmation that Val Emmich's Betty stint has come to an end.
And not to OD on the Henry/Matt parallels, but the new guy shares something else in common with Christopher Gorham's much-missed alter ego: he's keeping a secret. A secret that could impact Betty's life in a significant way.

Christopher Gorham has closed a deal to reprise his role as Betty's ex-love Henry, setting the stage for a geektastic showdown with her current beau, Matt (Daniel Eric Gold).
Ugly Betty creator Silvio Horta confirms to me exclusively that Gorham -- who's currently trying to stay alive on CBS' Harper's Island -- will reappear in the show's two-hour season finale on May 21 when Betty runs into Henry and his new girlfriend Chloe (played by Gossip Girl's Dream Walker) in the Big Apple. To prove to themselves that they've moved on, Betty and Henry agree to go on a double date to a Mets game with their respective significant others. Good times, right? Not exactly...
"As Henry and Betty reconnect, it could potentially threaten her relationship with Matt," teases Horta, who adds that he's "really happy" to have Gorham back in the fold. "Chris has always been, and will always be, part of the Ugly Betty family."
But how big a part of the family will he be? Horta isn't saying whether Gorham will be back in the fall, which leaves me with no other choice than to pose the following question to you fine folks: Who are you rooting for: Team Matt or Team Henry?
Don't forget: Betty returns next Thursday!
