Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Holidaze"
Nov 20, 2009 09:22 AM ET by Natalie Abrams
The final Grey's Anatomy episode of 2009 takes us on a journey through the holiday season. While Derek attempts to build a prototype to save a child's life and Teddy tries to sustain a heartless patient, Sloan's world is rocked by the arrival of a new family member. Also, the Teddy-Owen-Cristina love triangle takes a new twist.
On the eve of Thanksgiving, the Chief pulls Meredith aside to explain that he hasn't fallen off the wagon. He's going through "situational depression," which escalated his drinking. In what appears to be bribery, the Chief offers to be her mentor. Derek finds this new situation odd, but Meredith hasn't been able to get on a surgery since the merger and she's not going to give up this advantage.
Elsewhere, Cristina and Owen are getting hot and heavy in the on-call room. They're interrupted by a page from Teddy, but it's Cristina who goes running to her. Someone's hot for teacher, especially when Teddy decides to actually remove the heart of their patient. The now heartless Kelsey was brought in earlier by her brand new boyfriend, whose heart is big enough for the two of them. He decides to stay by her side.
In a phone conversation with Bailey's mother, we learn that the doc hasn't told her family that she and Tucker are getting divorced. Callie overhears this exchange and calls her out: "How long can you keep that a secret?" she asks. Bailey replies, "When you started dating woman, how long did you keep that secret from your family?"
Just when you thought the doctors of Seattle Grace didn't have enough problems to deal with, in walks a hot blonde looking for Dr. Sloan. For a split second, Mark does a double take of the girl, but those thoughts are quickly driven out of his mind when she reveals that he's her father. Getting down to brass tax, Callie brings in the paternity test kit.
Over in the O.R., Derek finds himself unsurprised by this news, explaining to Lexie that there could be "a gaggle of Sloans" out there. Unfortunately, the news just keeps on getting worse. Derek, Lexie and Arizona cannot go any further in surgery on their young patientówho has a cluster of tangled blood vessels in his brainówithout killing him. "Happy Thanksgiving, Jacobson family," says Arizona.
Owen and Teddy find themselves alone in the ambulance bay. (Awkward, party of two.) With the slow melodic music playing in the background, you can just feel Teddy's heart actually breaking. She cuts Owen off before he can explain, preferring not to actually have the dreaded follow up conversation that will just lead to more heartbreak.
Back to the baby daddy drama (well, she's not a baby, that's for sure). Mark is having trouble even speaking, let alone comprehending the severity of his situation. "Dude, are you like high or something?" asks Little Sloan (yes, I called her that). Derek saves Mark from his crisis, needing help with Nicholas' case. Unfortunately, the only way to operate on the little tyke is to create instruments small enough to fit in his nasal cavity. Can Big Sloan save the day?
The remaining three of the original Fab Five practice sutures while they discuss what they're not thankful for this Thanksgiving. The list is dominated by the merger and the Mercy Westers. On the upside, Meredith is able to help Alex with his technique, thanks to her private lessons with the Chief. This leads to one of the best exchanges of the night:
Alex to Meredith: "You're his bitch."
Meredith to Cristina: "Well, in that case, you're Teddy's bitch."
Alex to himself: "Maybe that's my problem. I'm nobody's bitch."
Cristina to Alex: "You were Izzie's bitch."
Alex to Cristina: "You're the bitch."
Thanksgiving dinner at Callie's place turns into a family affair. Mark shows up with Little Sloan and drops two bombs on Lexie. Little Sloan really is his daughter, and she's moving in with Lexie and Mark for the time being. Sadly, this news comes at the worst time, as Lexie chops off the end of her pinkie while cutting up celery. "Ouch."
Jumping ahead to Christmas Eve, Meredith pushes the Chief to make up with Derek. Dancing around the subject, he pushes the conversation back to surgery. Another doc who's avoiding certain topics is Mark, who, according to Lexie, has said about three sentences to his new found daughter over the last month. His first attempt to talk to his "vapid" daughter doesn't go so well. "What are you looking at? You old perv." Truer words could not have been spoken by the spawn of Big Sloan.
Meanwhile, Bailey is having daddy issues of her own. Her father pays an unexpected visit, considering everyone else in the family knows Bailey is getting a divorce. Later, Callie meets Miranda's dad in the O.R. gallery. She comes out to him, saying her family had a hard time accepting that at first, but they worked through it. He should give Bailey the same courtesy.
Kelsey is still alive and kicking even though her ticker was removed. She is, however, getting really tired, but her boyfriend is still by her side, saying she needs to hang on at least until New Year's Eve. She asks if they'll arrange for her to go outside. While taking her out to see snow, Teddy recalls the time Owen ordered a snow maker in Iraq so his troops could feel at home. Jackson notices how nostalgic she gets, insinuating to Cristina that there's something more going on there.
After Bailey's surgery, her father says, for the first time in his life, he is ashamed of her. She's traded her husband for grueling hours and menial surgeries? "I would be a bad father today if I didn't look you in the eye and tell you that you have made a terrible mistake" he tells her. "You broke your family. You set your son up to fail. The child I raised, she was raised better than that." To quote Lexie when she cut off her finger: "Ouch." Trying to find some semblance of a life and to get her father off her back, Bailey later asks Meredith for an invitation to her home for Christmas dinner.
Back outside, while heartless Kelsey enjoys the snow, Owen's off-hand comment about Teddy enjoying Christmas seems to irk Cristina. The moment is interrupted though, as Kelsey collapses on the ground. The following morning, they discover that part of her bowel has died. During her surgery, which is successful, Bailey leads everyone is a rousing round of "Let it Snow."
Trying to finish the tools needed for Nicholas' surgery, Mark, Derek and Arizona ask if they can donate their Christmas bonuses to the cause since it has gone over budget. Bad news docs, there are no checks coming this holiday season. Derek offers to write a check and Arizona says she'll split it. Slow to react, Mark says, "I have a teenager. What if she wants to go to college?" Fittingly, Arizona responds with, "Have you met her?" Problem solved, Mark is in. The Chief takes this opportunity to finally apologize to Derek for trying to fire him.
Christmas dinner at the Shepherd-Grey home is a musical affair, with Owen on the guitar and Arizona and the Chief singing carols. This sets the stage for an unspoken conversation between Owen and Teddy, which starts with Teddy's longing stare and ends with Owen begrudgingly averting it.
When dinner kicks off, an argument breaks out between Bailey and her father. He's once again embarrassed by her talking about bowels, no less at the dinner table. She proceeds to say that despite her son not being with her for the holidays, he's a healthy, well loved and happy boy. She shouldn't raise him in a home that's not suitable.
New Year's Eve brings a flurry of news. The Chief declares to Meredith that he's not going to drink anymore and Little Sloan tells her father that she's pregnant. Also, the docs ring in the New Year by celebrating Nicholas' survival by Derek's hands.
In another part of the hospital, though, there's not much to celebrate when Cristina catches Owen looking longingly at Teddy. Dr. Hunt yells at Teddy for revealing her feelings in the first place and we learn that Owen felt the same way about her while they were in Iraq. "I have loved you forever," she says. "I'm in love with Cristina," he replies, cutting off their near-kiss.
Following that, Cristina brings the best news of all. She has found a donor for Kelsey. New Year's morning she gets to feel the first tick of her new heart, which races as her boyfriend proposes. Seeing this amazing moment, Cristina conveys to Owen that she knows what's going on with Teddy, and doesn't want him to stay with her just because he owes her anything. He passionately kisses her, setting their relationship in stone. "I want you because I love you," he tells her.
In the closing moments of the episode, Bailey's father calls her out one last time before leaving. He just wishes his daughter would've told him she got a divorce, but the pair is able to reconcile. Mer takes over in the daddy-issue department, though. Joe pages her to the bar, hoping she'll save a publically intoxicated Chief.
And that's the last episode of 2009, folks. Here are a few points for you to ponder until the show returns next year:
-Will Teddy continue to cause trouble for Cristina and Owen's relationship?
-Is the Chief heading down a dark path of destruction that may ultimately lead to his removal from the hospital?
-Can Mark truly be a father to Little Sloan?
