General Spoilers:

06/21 -
Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and actor T.R. Knight have both released statements confirming Knight's departure from the show. [...] The fate of Knight's character, George, was uncertain after this season's finale. Sources have confirmed that Katherine Heigl will be returning to the ABC drama next season, but there has been no official statement by Rhimes or ABC. Source: TV Guide Magazine
06/14 - E! Online's own Marc Malkin has an inside source who says that T.R. Knight is leaving Grey's Anatomy due to issues with executive producer Shonda Rhimes. Sources tell TVGuide.com, "That story is utterly false. Nothing at all has changed in T.R.'s status." Rhimes has also gone on record debunking new rumors that an entirely different actor would play George thanks to plastic surgery. However, we all know Shonda toed the lines of truth last season and likes to keep the audience guessing. Source: Kristin on E!Online

General Spoilers:

08/03 -
"Ellen Pompeo is pregnant but Meredith is not," says [Shonda] Rhimes, who teases that she has a "lovely story" that will lead into the actess' maternity leave this fall. Additionally, she has plans for some "really interesting stand-alone episodes" to help fill the void left by her leading lady's upcoming absence. "Eventually, everybody is going to leave the show," Rhimes says. "So we're looking at ways we can mess with the structure now... Season 6 is about finding the longevity of the show and figuring out if there is a future for this show beyond these characters." Source: Entertainment Weekly

General Spoilers:

09/06 -
Katherine Heigl won't have to worry about putting in long hours on the Grey's Anatomy set for much longer. Sources confirm to me exclusively that the actress is taking a five-episode hiatus from the ABC drama to go shoot the Greg Berlanti-directed romantic comedy Life as We Know It. ABC and Grey's producers have accommodated Heigl's busy film schedule before, but this is the first time they have given her permission to leave the show for an extended period of time. I'm told Heigl's absence will be explained on screen, although it's not clear what prompts Izzie to take off. (Marital trouble with Alex? A trip home to see mom? A Denny sighting in the Caribbean?) The fact that Heigl was granted such a lengthy leave of absence is surprising in light of the public tongue-lashing ABC president Stephen McPherson gave her last month for complaining about a 17-hour work day. Also, Heigl's departure - which starts this month and will kick in on screen around November - will almost certainly overlap with co-star Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave. Translation: Grey's will be without Izzie and Meredith at the same time! [...] Not so coincidentally, Grey's recently announced it was adding three new doctors to its rotation: Nora Zehetner, Robert Baker, and Jesse Williams are joining the cast as recurring residents/ medical professionals. [...] Mark-Lexie scoop is what you're getting. "They've got a lot of challenges coming down the pike," concedes exec producer Krista Vernoff. "The most consistent challenge is the one that's built into the fabric of their relationship: He's pushing 40, she's in her early 20s." [... Derek]'ll get some much-needed alone time. As exec producer Krista Vernoff explains, Dempsey has been "patiently" waiting to get a story that wasn't directly tied to the Der-Mer love story. And this season he'll get his wish. "Derek hasn't been a fully explored character separate from Meredith," Vernoff admits. "The fact that by necessity Ellen is going to need a little less screen time gives us more encouragement to explore Derek as a doctor." This includes what Vernoff describes as an "extraordinary medical story" involving Derek and a patient in this season's sixth episode, directed by co-star Chandra Wilson. Source: The Ausiello Files
09/06 - According to inside sources, this season of Grey's Anatomy is overwhelmingly defined by the merger of Seattle Grace and crosstown rival Mercy West. Yep, Seattle Grace is about to double in size, bringing in a slate of new doctors and paving the way for major shake-ups in the season to come. What does this mega medical merger mean for our favorites? Well, Dr. Izzie Stevens is getting fired. Yes, fired , as in dismissed or downsized. Izzie gets laid off in the big merger and vanishes for a handful of episodes while Heigl shoots her next movie, Life as We Know It. The shake-up also provides cover for Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave. She'll fade into the background while new doctors, administrators and nurses (played by the likes of Robert Baker, Jesse Williams and Nora Zehetner ) fill in the gaps our MIA faves leave behind. Producers are, however, working to keep Meredith Grey in as many eps as possible. This week Pompeo is banking footage for her maternity leave by shooting scenes for two episodes at once. The Seattle Grace-Mercy West merger storyline is part of a long-term plan hatched by producers and ABC execs to make Grey's Anatomy a viable going concern for years to come. (We hear they want something like an ER that could continue for 15 years or more.) No matter who's pregnant, moonlighting or otherwise unavailable, the writers will have a large, endlessly expandable palette of characters and situations with which to work. So, going forward, if Patrick Dempsey needs to shoot a movie (as he will, later this season), the new and improved Seattle Grace permits plenty of wiggle room in schedules and storylines. 08/30 - Jesse Williams has been cast in a multiepisode arc on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. Details about the character are under wraps, but it is understood that he is a sexy, confident new medical professional. Source: The Hollywood Reporter
08/30 - Sources tell us that Grey's Anatomy has cast two very hairy new guest stars: a monkey and a bear. Yes, in an upcoming episode, the Grey's castmembers work with a monkey and a bear, and no those aren't euphemisms for something. Source: Kristin on E!Online
08/16 - Callie and Arizona's relationship is going to progress this season. [...] James Pickens Jr. tells us, "The Chief has some really interesting stuff coming up this season. There's a part of his personal life that viewers haven't seen yet, and it's going to be very intriguing, and they're going to really like what's going to happen." As far as how George's death is going to affect everyone, Pickens says, "Each person is going to be touched in a different way. Everyone is going to be affected. Knight was an integral part of the cast, and he's one of the more talented guys I've worked with, so I wish him well." And in case you're wondering, sources tell us that Chandra Wilson is already in "prep" for her directorial debut, which is set for either episode six or seven. [...] Owen Hunt and Cristina Yang are getting even closer this year, though something arises from his past that may throw a wrench in the matter. [Kevin McKidd reveals that the relationship is] "going to get quite complicated in the sense that I think they've gotten over the whole trauma of his past, but then his past comes back again at some point to haunt him. Someone comes to the hospital that he was connected to in his past, not his ex-fiancée, but it's somebody we didn't expect. I think it could get a little tricky, but exciting and interesting. Hopefully it will bring them closer together in the long run."Source: Kristin on E!Online
08/09 - Exec producer Shonda Rhimes announced that Chandra Wilson's pulling double duty! The Grey's Anatomy Emmy nominee will cross over to sister show Private Practice early into season 6 (episode 3, specifically) when Bailey visits Oceanside Wellness. I'm told the crackling chemistry between Bailey and Sam that was on display during previous crossovers will once again get some play during this latest visit. Rhimes is keeping Wilson very busy this season. As I previously announced, Wilson will step behind the cameras later this fall and direct her first episode of Grey's Anatomy. General Spoilers:

10/18 -
Veteran actor Joel Grey, 77, will appear in a November episode of Grey's Anatomy as Izzie's old high school teacher. "It's a pretty amazing episode," says show creator Shonda Rhimes. "He was the teacher who convinced Izzie she was more than a girl from the trailer park. And now he's in need of her help." This will be Katie's only episode in November sweeps, as she is off shooting a movie. Rhimes is also considering bringing back Sharon Lawrence as Izzie's trashy mama, Robbie Stevens, who was last seen at her ailing daughter's bedside. Source: Keck's Exclusives
10/11 - Grey's Anatomy is enlisting Jack Bauer's ex to throw a monkey wrench into Owen and Cristina's burgeoning romance. Sources confirm that Grey's has tapped former 24 heroine Kim Raver to join the cast as a new surgeon and a possible love interest for Kevin McKidd's doc. Back in August, Owen's portrayer, Kevin McKidd, revealed that a major skeleton would tumble out of Owen's closet this season. "Someone comes to the hospital that he was connected to in his past, not his ex-fiancée, but it's somebody we didn't expect," the actor told E! Online. "I think it could get a little tricky, but exciting and interesting. Hopefully it will bring Owen and Cristina closer in the long run." Raver's role is recurring and she will debut in this season's ninth episode, airing Nov. 12. Source: The Ausiello Files
10/11 - Meredith Grey won't go missing from Seattle Grace after all. Sources confirm that Ellen Pompeo is expected to return to the set of Grey's Anatomy "very soon" after giving birth to baby girl Stella Luna Sept. 15. Thanks to her early return, as well as her willingness to preshoot scenes before the birth (most of which took place in bed after Meredith's liver surgery in [October 8's] episode), it is working out that not a single episode will go Meredith Grey-less. Pretty good news for Meredith and Derek fans, right? As for all you Owen and Christina fans who are freaking out over rumors of trouble in paradise... Sources confirm that 24 and Lipstick Jungle beauty Kim Raver will appear on the show starting Nov. 12 in a recurring role as a surgeon, and if things work out, she could be upped to series-regular status. So what of the notion that Raver could be a love interest for Owen, as my frenemy has speculated? "It's possible that they do have some kind of connection," one show insider tells me. "But I think Shonda Rhimes and the writers are big fans of Cristina and Owen and will do right by them in the end." McKidd himself hinted at some sort of trouble ahead when he told us, "Someone comes to the hospital that [Owen] was connected to in his past-not his ex-fiancée, but it's somebody we didn't expect. I think it could get a little tricky, but exciting and interesting. Hopefully it will bring Owen and Cristina closer in the long run." I'm told Raver's storyline hasn't yet been shot. General Spoilers:

11/14 -
"[Meredith and Derek] will face some relationship challenges, many of them work-oriented, in the second half of the season," reveals exec producer Shonda Rhimes. The Queen of Shondaland, however, insists that this latest obstacle will not result in the newly married-via-Post-It pair breaking up. [...] Izzie will be MIA for another string of episodes (most likely in early 2010). Source: The Ausiello Files
11/14 - We will see Arizona sing in the coming weeks! Better still, it's a duet, [...] with one of her male co-stars. Source: TV Guide Online
11/14 - Girlfriends Callie and Arizona will share screen time with boyfriends Jeff and Aaron in an early 2010 episode. The male couple, in their 30's checks into Seattle Grace Mercy Hospital when Aaron, an overweight opera singer, takes ill (Grey's is looking for an actor who can sing a cappella). Aaron will be supported by his husband Jeff, who works as a teacher. Source: Keck's Exclusives
