Kiefer Sutherland: Jack Bauer Will Fight Another Day

Mar 24, 2009 10:14 AM ET by Adam Bryant

Jack will be back for 24's eighth season.

Kiefer Sutherland says he will stick with the Fox drama, and that it's up to the writers to determine how long the show will air, according to The Associated Press. Sutherland said his decision to return for Season 8, which will start shooting in May, was out of respect for the show that revived his career.

"If I was going to liken 24 to a girlfriend, 24 has been really good to me," he said. "And I need to be really good back."

Sutherland said he has other projects he would like to work on, but that his iconic character remains his top priority. "I was so fortunate to be part of something like 24 that my focus is still on that right now," he said.

As for how many days 24 has left: "The real pressure is placed on the writers," Sutherland said. "It's a real question about how much they feel they can give and what they can do."

Sutherland, who can next be heard in this weekend's 3-D animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens, said he enjoyed the change of pace of doing a kid's flick, and isn't worried about being typecast in Bauer-like roles in the future.

"I will do the work I want to do and people can accept it or not," he said.

Are you pumped to have Sutherland on board for another year?

'24' takes Manhattan for season eight

Jack Bauer will be coming to New York in 2010

April 15, 2009

Kiefer Sutherland of '24' Start spreading the news: Jack Bauer will be saving the world from New York City on the next season of " 24."

The FOX series, which left Los Angeles (on screen, anyway) for Washington this season, will set its eighth season in New York, EW.com reports. The new season is set to begin filming in late spring and thus will have a significant portion of the production behind it when it hits the air in January 2010.

As has been the case for much of this D.C.-set season, "24" will actually do most of its filming at its Los Angeles home base. It's expected, though, that Kiefer Sutherland and the crew will take a field trip or two to New York to shoot some scenes.

Season eight will also feature "Slumdog Millionaire" star Anil Kapoor as a Middle Eastern leader who comes to the United States on a peace mission. EW also reports that Jack and Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) will be working at a reconstituted CTU.

There's no word yet on who will be leading the unit, or which other regulars from the current season will return.

Casting News for 24

Chris Diamantopoulos -- best known as Debra Messing's gay BFF on The Starter Wife -- has been tapped to play the series regular role of Rob Weiss, the argumentative and tough new Chief of Staff to President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones). He replaces Taylor's current C.O.S., Ethan Kanin, who snatched his job back in last Monday's finale after the prez's psycho daughter, Olivia, was taken into federal custody.

As previously reported, Day 8's action will switch from Washington D.C. to New York City and center on an assassination plot against a visiting foreign leader (Slumdog Millionaire's Anil Kapoor, the new season's first piece of casting).

Bonus piece of trivia free of charge: Diamantopoulos is married to Ugly Betty's sublime Becki Newton.

EW.COM: Ausiello Report

Suddenly, I find myself counting the minutes until 24's new season. Perhaps this is why: Katee Sackhoff is joining the cast!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Battlestar Galactica heroine has been tapped to play the series regular role of Dana Walsh, a highly respected and down-to-earth data analyst at the new and improved New York branch of CTU.

General Spoilers:

08/02 - We already know that season eight takes place in New York, but it's actually a continuation of the season seven storyline. "Season seven and eight, probably more than any other season that we've done before, are really connected together. The storylines from season seven really do play all the way through into season eight," said Kiefer. We're told it takes place about eight or nine months following Jack slipping into a coma. "Basically the threat centers around a peace conference at the U.N. that is being headed by the President of the United States and the President of Iran played by Anil Kapoor of Slumdog Millionaire fame. The rest of the day goes forward from that point," spilled Kiefer. In past seasons, 24 was very focused on wars and terror; however, Gordon said they're going to capture the audience this season "with peace, with the possibility of peace," to which Kiefer joked, "Don't be alarmed, we do still blow s--t up." On top of the new threat Jack needs to deal with, he's also coming down from his near-death experience. Executive producer Manny Coto said, "The season starts with Jack in a place we haven't seen and that he is happy with his daughter and his granddaughter, and it's really an interesting place because when you see those scenes in the beginning you realize, gosh, we haven't seen this side of him for so long. There's always this dread when you're watching it that this is not going to last and it makes those moments so much more poignant." Added Kiefer, "It's about trying to figure out how to get Jack back to a place where living mattered. His life had been crushed so badly over the past seven seasons." Obviously, Jack's happiness doesn't last very long, or else there wouldn't be an exciting 24 hours ahead of us. Besides the imminent threat on the U.N., Renee is actually bringing some trouble back with her. Executive producer David Fury said, "Renee will return within the first few episodes and she will be a different person than she was. The hint of the relationship that we put forth in season seven-we will be following through with this season. The season begins with Jack in a happy place ready to start a new life. And when Renee enters the scene, she is a damaged person. But she is someone he decides could be a part of his new life." As for a possible romantic spark between Jack and Renee, Kiefer said, "That was someone he obviously had very serious feelings for. The desire for season eight is to protect all of the things that would make living worthwhile." That sounds like a pretty close relationship is on the horizon for Jack and Renee. In a sneak peek shown at Comic-Con, fans got a preview of the New York CTU division. It's all sleek, shiny and high-tech in a semi-sexy way (underground tunnel included!). Although high-tech is what's going to give Chloe a hard time in the upcoming season. Mary-Lynn Rajskub said, "My character starts off a little bit behind, if you can believe that for being such a genius, because I've been at home with my son. So I'm back at CTU and having to relearn some stuff." It probably doesn't help that new cast member Katee Sackhoff is her boss. Quite opposite to her head-to-head rivalry with Janeane Garofalo's Janis Gold, Sackhoff's Dana Walsh puts on the overfriendly "you'll get better, you just need practice" tone to the annoyance of Chloe. Dana Walsh, on the other hand, is not quite as friendly as she appears. Mr. Buffy Summers, ahem, Freddie Prinze Jr. , whose character, Cole Ortiz, is engaged to Walsh, told us, "There's a dark side to this relationship that you find out about fairly quickly. For a character like Cole-who is someone who is very disciplined and substituted a lot of feelings that he had post-9/11 for the qualities that define a Marine, like self-respect and dignity and honor-for someone like that to go through what this character is going to go through, it's really going to turn his world upside down as far as their relationship goes." Adding fuel to the fire of her character's possible evil side was Katee saying she told the writers she loved the scripts, "but at some point I'm going to need a gun." Source: Kristin on E!Online

"HUMAN TARGET," "24" LOSE NFL LEAD-IN

By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

[01.05.10 - 12:18 PM]

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX's loss is CBS's gain.

The NFL announced yesterday that CBS will air the late game on Sunday, January 17, spoiling FOX's long-standing plans to use said Divisional Playoff coverage to boost the season premieres of "Human Target" at 8:00/7:00c and "24" at 9:00/8:00c that night.

How long-standing? FOX went as far as making it part of its upfront announcement back in May.

The network will instead offer up an encore of "24's" season seven finale at 7:00/6:00c that night, which was originally set for the West Coast only.

CBS then, with the addition of NFL coverage through the 7:00/6:00c hour, will bump "60 Minutes" to 8:00/7:00c followed by a new "Cold Case" at 9:00/8:00c and a repeat of "NCIS" at 10:00/9:00c.

To recap:

Sunday, January 17 (CBS)

4:30/3:30c (approx.) - "NFL: AFC Divisional Playoff: TBD @ San Diego"

8:00/7:00c - "60 Minutes" (Special Time)

9:00/8:00c - "Cold Case"

10:00/9:00c - "NCIS" (Repeat)

Sunday, January 17 (FOX)

7:00/6:00c - "24" (Repeat of Season Seven Finale)

8:00/7:00c - "Human Target" (Series Premiere - Special Night)

9:00/8:00c - "24" (Two-Hour Season Premiere - Special night)
