NCIS' Goth Girl Teases Secrets Galore

by Joseph Hudak

Pauley Perrette, NCIS

As the hip forensic specialist Abby Sciuto on CBS' NCIS (Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET), Pauley Perrette lends an air of edginess to the sometimes-staid HQ. The charmingly quirky actress and aspiring documentarian chatted with us about Abby's road to forensic fame.

TV Guide: So what's your character's real appeal?
Pauley Perrette:
I think part of it is that she's supersmart. I want to be her when I grow up. She's certainly not your typical one-dimensional anything: scientist, alternative person or genius. She's like the girl next door in chains and a choker collar. [Laughs]

TV Guide: In tonight's case, you examine a tattoo in the lab. How many does Abby have?
Perrette:
Abby has a lot of tattoos. She has more than I do. I think I have 10. It's the only job I've ever had where my bosses are excited when I get new tattoos!

TV Guide: Is the spider web on your neck real?
Perrette:
That one belongs to [creator] Donald P. Bellisario. [Laughs] [It's] so that no matter what I'm wearing, there's a very visible tattoo.

TV Guide: You must have a lot of Goth fans.
Perrette:
Yeah. It's great. Especially when I have young girls who see it as "Goth girl being smart." Don told me that when he wrote Magnum, P.I., he wanted to show a different example of a Vietnam vet, and when he wrote Abby, he wanted to show alternative culture, but someone who is smart and good at her job. I tend to never use "Goth." I don't want to pigeonhole her.

TV Guide: What do you see for her this year?
Perrette:
Apparently, this season, everybody has secrets. And I want to know as much as everybody else what Abby's secret is! [Laughs] I don't think it's just gonna be a hidden tattoo.

Because of scheduling conflicts I didnt get to see much of last season...why did Gibbs retire?

Has NCIS' Gibbs Met His Match in Susanna Thompson?

by Michael Davis

NCIS' Mark Harmon, Susanna Thompson

On Nov. 7 (postponed from its previously announced airdate of Oct. 24), Susanna Thompson (Once and Again, The Book of Daniel) pops up on CBS' NCIS (Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET) as an Army investigator who catches the attention (or is that a-tenn-shun?) of special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). The versatile actress recently took a call from TV Guide to discuss what may blossom into a full-fledged love affair for Harmon's oft-taciturn, coffee-addicted character.

TV Guide: Cranky-pants Gibbs in love? Will this be the start of something big?
Susanna Thompson:
I'm not sure where they'll take it, or how far they'll take it, but certainly they'll take it a couple steps further. I love the dynamic between the two of them. They don't give each other any slack.

TV Guide: How hot does it get?
Thompson:
There's interest in the other on a suppressed level, or a hidden level, right now, because they're doing their job. But to get that out of the way, she's had to call him on some of his stuff, to say, "Look, you're going to have to trust me. If you haven't trusted other people before, you're going to have to trust me because we need to work on this."

TV Guide: As an actress, how were you able to communicate that kind of interest in him while also maintaining the seriousness of purpose of a lieutenant colonel?
Thompson:
A lot is conveyed through the eyes and conveyed through humor. I think if there is something being felt and thought and the camera's there to pick it up, it'll pick it up. And so whatever is being felt, on so many different levels, it's seen. And it's not hard to do that with Mark Harmon.

TV Guide: NCIS is known to have a loose and fun set, with a cast that's fast on its feet.
Thompson:
That crew has worked with each other since JAG. They like working with each other and they're respected for what they do, so it was a great environment to step into. They know how to take care of problems really fast, and the actors are just crack-ups. They're always sort of playing jokes on each other. Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo were doing this whole routine about what the show would be like in its ninth season, just spoofing the show. Those two, boy, when you get them started.... For me, I had to actually remove myself from it, but not all the time. I kept gravitating over towards their military advisor, this really strong ex-Marine. He'd come over and just very subtlety, very gently but with that strength and power of his stature just grab my shoulders and just say something little like, "Your arms are swinging a little too much as you go up that hill."

TV Guide: Your character gives Gibbs the opportunity for the first time to have some kind of love life in the present. It will be intriguing to see what he's like at the beginning of a relationship. We've really only seen the middle and the end of Gibbs' relationships, in flashbacks.
Thompson:
Well, you'll see subtle things there because this first episode is just laying the groundwork. It's mainly about the case that they're trying to solve. But you see little moments of him holding the door, and his crew notices that. And I also think you see a sense of jealousy in his crew, like, "Who is this lady?" There's a real protective sense from them about him.

TV Guide: They all want to please Daddy. They all desperately need his approval.
Thompson:
David McCallum was hilarious. I guess his character and Gibbs' are still a little bit at odds with each other, and so when I walk in, the doctor just turns all his attention to me, to my character.

TV Guide: It's going to take Ducky a long time to get over the fact that his friend and colleague Jethro left everybody and headed off to Mexico. To [creator] Don Bellisario's credit, he writes in these things to remind the actors that that's how people behave. They don't get over things in an hour.
Thompson:
It's very smart writing. He's brilliant that way, because you need to give these people a backstory. You need to have a history. You need to help them to show up as real people. And that's how the writers and the creators can help the actors do that.

TV Guide: I can't have the Borg Queen on the phone and not ask a Star Trek question. Did you want to purchase a piece of memorabilia at any point during the recent Christie's auction?
Thompson:
I used to joke that I was saving every piece of anything from Star Trek for my old-age pension.

TV Guide: For fanboys everywhere, you are part of the lore and legend. The Borg Queen is a humanoid we love to hate.
Thompson:
I do realize that. Next Generation was one of my husband's favorite shows when it was first on, for its stories and caliber of acting. When I got a small part on Star Trek: The Next Generation, I could go home and just say, "Here's your gift. I did it, now leave me alone." But it unfolded into another Next Generation appearance, and into a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and then into Voyager. I had no idea it would be the first step on a path into Star Trek history.

TV Guide: Well, all I can say is live long and prosper.

NCIS' Perrette Fights Real Crime in Her Downtime

by Joseph Hudak

NCIS' Pauley Perrette on America's Most Wanted

Turns out Pauley Perrette isn't doing all her crime fighting on CBS' NCIS. The actress behind gothic forensic specialist Abby Sciuto turns up on Saturday's 21st-season premiere of America's Most Wanted (9 pm/ET, Fox) to help her hero, John Walsh, try to find the killers of two young girls: Raven Jeffries of Detroit and Shannon Paulk of Prattville, Alabama. But Perrette isn't just lending her face to the cases she admirably put up $20,000 of her own money toward the reward funds and will be manning the AMW call center this weekend. TVGuide.com spoke to the actress about doing her part and what we can expect for her character this season on NCIS.

TVGuide.com: Why'd you get involved in these cases?
Pauley Perrette:
I'm a huge America's Most Wanted fan and I saw this show about these two different little girls who were murdered, one in Detroit and one in Prattville. My boyfriend's family is from Detroit, and I've got a whole bunch of family in Prattville. I couldn't stop thinking about it. So I contacted America's Most Wanted and asked if I could post a reward in the cases. They asked if we could do a show about it, which was kind of weird because I'm usually more private about altruism. [Perrette put up $10,000 for each case.]

TVGuide.com: You visit the crime scenes in tonight's show. That must have been heavy.
Perrette:
It was so heavy. We went to Alabama. We went to Detroit. We met with Raven's mother and her family. We went to the crime scene, where she was abducted and where the body was found. There aren't words to describe.

TVGuide.com: What can the casual viewer, who likely doesn't have a tip in this case, do to help?
Perrette:
It's important to remember that these victims of crimes and their families feel so alone. But they're not alone. All of us out here can think about it, pray about it, help in any way we can. Remember the pain these people are going through.

TVGuide.com: How'd you become such a huge AMW fan?
Perrette:
I've always hated criminals and crime. Life is hard enough without someone walking into your life on purpose and making it worse. I think John Walsh is an American hero. His [show] is an incredible public service. And it works!

TVGuide.com: In the less tragic world of TV drama... what can you tell us about this season of NCIS?
Perrette:
We're shooting our 100th episode right now [airing Oct. 30]. It's right around Halloween and it's kind of a spooky Scooby-Doo-type show, where things creak and there may or may not be a ghost ship.

TVGuide.com: What can we expect for Abby?
Perrette:
I'm sure she'll be in peril a few times. You gotta love the Abby-in-peril episodes!

TVGuide.com: Any romance on the horizon for her?
Perrette:
I haven't heard a peep about romance, but who knows? Maybe it'll be Ducky. Or Ziva. That would be something else.

NCIS Enlists Scarecrow and Mrs. King's Bruce Boxleitner

Bruce Boxleitner (Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Babylon 5) will guest-star on NCIS during fall sweeps, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Boxleitner will play Vice Admiral C. Clifford Chase, a high-ranking Navy official who turns to Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and the rest of the NCIS team when his friend is killed. Chase believes the motive behind the murder could have national security implications.

Best known for his roles as operative Lee Stetson on Scarecrow and John J. Sheridan on Babylon 5, Boxleitner, 60, has also appeared on such series as How the West Was Won, Bring 'Em Back Alive, Chuck, Cold Case and Heroes. He also starred as the title character in Tron, a role he is set to reprise in December's Tron: Legacy.

NCIS airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS. Boxleitner's episode, "Broken Arrow," is scheduled to air Nov. 9.

I LOVE Bruce Boxleitner, but I hope he hasn't gotten all old and wrinkly looking, or worse, doesn't have that plastic face syndrome going on.
