Season 5 of 'Friday Night Lights' starts in October

By Mikey O'Connell

August 11, 2010 7:44 PM ET

Your 13-episode-long "Friday Night Lights" goodbye party just got a start date.

According to EW, the fifth and final season of the high school football drama bows on DirecTV October 27. And as sad as it is to think about a world without the people of Dillon, Texas, it's pretty satisfying when you think about how many times this show almost didn't make it.

October 27 is pretty soon if you watched the recent NBC run of Season 4, which just ended on August 6, with the triumph of Coach Taylor's (Kyle Chandler) East Dillon Lions over his former team, the Panthers. Two more cast members also lost their series regular status, as Landry (Jesse Plemons) flew to Chicago with Saracen (Zach Gilford) and Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) took the fall for his brother and went off to prison.

But at least the final season promises a few returns. Adrianne Palicki confirmed to Zap2it that she's in the final two episodes, along with many other original cast members.

If you want a stroll down memory lane before the October premiere -- or before NBC's unannounced run of the final season -- ABC Family kicks of its syndicated run of "FNL" September 1.

TVSquad is reporting that NBC has pulled the plug on Undercovers. The remaining 3 episodes are still scheduled to air.

According to the Live Feed, the J.J. Abrams spy series will air its final three episodes in the coming weeks.

A few weeks ago, NBC handed out back nine orders to new shows such as 'The Event,' 'Outsourced' and 'Law & Order: Los Angeles,' but left 'Undercovers' off the list.

The series, starring Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, dazzled advertisers and critics with its trailer, but failed to impress when full episodes began hitting the screen. Hailed as one of the most diverse new shows of the fall (both the show's leads are black), the series never gained traction in Nielsen ratings.

The show drew 8.57 million viewers with its series premiere, not a very high number for a buzzed-about show. The viewers began steadily fleeing, with the Oct. 27 episode only bringing in 5.45 million viewers. 'Mercy' held the same timeslot as 'Undercovers' last season and followed a similar ratings trajectory; however its numbers began to really slip in January after 10 episodes.

'Undercovers' joins 'Outlaw,' 'The Whole Truth,' 'My Generation' and 'Lone Star' in the 2010-11 canceled show graveyard.

Bad news for fans hoping to save Running Wilde: Fox confirmed with EW that they are not ordering a back nine of the Keri Russell-Will Arnett series. Though the freshman comedy has not been officially canceled, the network's decision to not order additional episodes is concerning — this could mean Wilde might be running off the air sometime soon. The show had been suffering in the ratings: Two weeks ago, the series attracted just 2.9 million viewers. (That number, however, came with some silver lining: It was an 18 percent increase from the week prior.) Fox also decided to bench the series for November sweeps.

TNT has canceled exec producer Jerry Bruckheimer's Dark Blue, the show about a group of undercover cops starring Dylan McDermott, according to Variety. Blue had not performed well for TNT in its second season, averaging 2.2 million viewers per episode. The network has the second season of Ray Romano's Men of a Certain Age slated to begin in December.

BALTIMORE - Celebrity baker Duff Goldman hasn't decorated his last elaborate cake, but he no longer has Food Network cameras following his every move.

The network confirmed Sunday that it has canceled "Ace of Cakes," the reality show that followed Goldman and the colorful staff of his Baltimore bakery, Charm City Cakes.

The network says in a statement that the show's upcoming 10th season, which begins airing in January, will be its last. "Ace of Cakes" debuted in 2006. The final season will consist of six episodes, bringing the total for the series to 116.

Goldman confirmed in a statement on Charm City Cakes' website that the show has been canceled and that production has already wrapped on the final season.

Food Network general manager and senior vice president Bob Tuschman says the network is developing new show concepts for Goldman.

Death watch 2011: Fall TV survival status report

by Lynette Rice and James Hibberd

UPDATED: Another week of fall TV data, and the rankings are starting to shift. Some shows have climbed because DVR data has been added to the mix. But not everybody benefited from delayed viewership. (Sorry, Up All Night and Terra Nova). Here is how the new shows are faring among the ever-crucial adults 18-49 rating and our thoughts on which will survive the winter:

2 Broke Girls (CBS): 5.7 rating

Status: If this comedy were on other networks, it would have already earned a pickup. CBS tends to be conservative about giving early endorsements (and when it comes to its Monday night block, there
