Big Brother Producer Talks BBCAN5 Twists

By John Powell – GlobalTV

The countdown is on for the launch of another season of Big Brother Canada, and this season’s theme is space and time. We caught up with Executive Producer Erin Brock to talk about all things #BBCAN5.

“Our house this year is a space ship. The entire concept is that all the HouseGuests are going to board the BBCan Odyssey and the entire premise of the season is that out in space, there are no laws when it comes to time,” revealed Erin Brock. “The idea for the theme came from the fact that we are going to take HouseGuests from seasons past and give them a chance to rewrite their history against HouseGuests of the present in a ship built in the future. You will see that everything that we do this season will have a play on time.”

Returning HouseGuests Gary Levy, Neda Kalantar, Kevin Martin, Bruno Ielo, Ika Wong, Dallas Cormier, Sindy Nguyen and Cassandra Shahinfar will have the chance to change their Big Brother legacies for the better, especially those whose games were ended by unforeseen twists.

“This is really about redemption and second chances. It is not an All-Stars season but the concept is about people who you want to see get a second chance,” she said. “Gary, this is the ultimate second chance for him. He won the show but he didn’t win it. Neda, played that game for Jon and what is the one mistake she made? She fell in love. At the end of the day, he cut her. She played a flawless game that season. All of our second chance stories this year are a little different.”

It won’t be a walk in the park for the returning Houseguests either. With such newbie HouseGuests as Canada’s reigning heavyweight boxing champion, Dillon ‘Big Country’ Carman looking to land a knockout punch and take home the grand prize, this season looks to be the most challenging yet.

“Dillon is a huge super fan of the show. He watches the show every year. He could talk about every nuanced thing that has happened on Big Brother Canada. He absolutely loves the game. He loves the show and has desperately wanted to be on the show. He auditioned like everyone else. He applied. We didn’t go after him. He came to us and I am so excited to see what he does inside the house,” said Brock.

The ultra-competitive Carman is not the only newbie the returnees have to worry about though. This season’s crop of HouseGuests are a mix of thoughtful and savvy gamers, each bringing something new and different to the series.

“I think there is some extremely interesting people. There are some characters we have never had before. There is a young guy from Quebec, a French-Canadian guy who believes it is better to be French-Canadian than English-Canadian. We have never had that. It is kinda of an interesting thing. There is also a French-Canadian girl who is super smart, super sassy girl from Montreal. She is a masters student and she is highly intellectual. She has the opposite opinion as he does. It will be interesting to see what happens,” Brock revealed.

Some fans might believe that the veterans might have an advantage over the newbies but Brock is quick to point out that Big Brother’s theme is to Expect the Unexpected and being a veteran or a super fan is not always a benefit in a game where the house politics can change from week to week.

“I don’t think it is an advantage at all. Like Bruno and Kevin, they were not good buddies on their season. We purposely cast people who weren’t uber-connected outside of the show. The people we selected didn’t spend a lot of time off-screen with each other,” explained Brock about the casting process. “It is easy to say they will play together and it is an unfair advantage but everything changes when you walk through those doors. You can go in with the best-laid plan in the world but nobody’s initial plan ever works out in the end.”

Just like previous seasons, Big Brother Canada will be interactive this year with fans having an impact on the season and the game in various ways. Fans will also be getting unparalleled access to the HouseGuests with ‘After the Eviction Live’. ‘After the Eviction Live’ will be a weekly Facebook Live chat featuring an extended evicted houseguest interview hosted by Arisa Cox, every Thursday night. Following the live eviction episode, fans can join the conversation by heading to the Big Brother Canada Facebook page to ask their questions live.

“We really feel that our approach here is that we cannot be complacent in what we do. It is go big or go home. That is how the entire team here approaches the show,” said Brock about the new theme and changes coming to Big Brother Canada this season.

The new season of Big Brother Canada will air on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT, Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and on a new night on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Global.

So it looks like there will be no "Side Show" this season.

I don't see "After Dark" scheduled anywhere on Global or the Slice network, as in previous seasons, either.

Those 2 extras figured very prominently in my enjoyment of past seasons.

Since I'm usually busy on Thursday nights and have to watch the episodes later from PVR, I won't be able to catch the FaceBook Live "After The Eviction" episodes when they happen.  Hopefully they will be able to be viewed from a Facebook archive later on.

Looks like they've changed the process for getting tickets to the tapings of the live shows, as well.

Does not seem like an improvement.  Guess time will tell.

Canada! In the first shockwave of the season you will get to send the housegeust of your choice into the future.

In this shockwave, your vote will grant one houseguest immunity, keeping them safe until jury starts.

Choose carefully Canada and be strategic, this could be a blessing or a curse.

Canada, this season Big Brother is giving you unprecedented power! In the first shockwave of the season, you’ll be able to help send any one houseguest…into the future!

So what does this mean? Here’s how it works: In this shockwave, your vote will grant one houseguest immunity, keeping them safe until jury starts. That means immunity from eviction! The chosen houseguest will still take part in all houseguest related activities during the course of their immunity - they will participate in challenges and tasks, are eligible for HOH and can be a have-not, and most importantly, they will still vote to evict. They just cannot be nominated for eviction.

This week’s evicted houseguest will NOT be eligible for the immunity. IF THIS WEEK'S EVICTED HOUSEGUEST RECEIVES THE MOST VOTES FROM CANADA, the houseguest with the next highest votes will be granted immunity.

So who in the house would you like to see have this immunity? Choose carefully Canada and be strategic!

Voting closes in
