Fortunately not everybody agrees, and although it's slower than I think it should be, racism is slowly being eradicated. It might a while, even centuries, but eventually people will be judged on their character, and not the color of their skin, their sexual preferences, or their religion. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chyron1, I agree wholeheartedly with you. I wish it could go faster but equity is worth the fight even the smallest of steps in the right direction are major victories and worth every moment of the slow difficult struggle.
  2. Just because doing something and talkinga bout racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice would be a long slow process does not mean you do nothing. Writting to CBS and letting them know you care is good, this way the station knows people are paying attention and so will they. They need the ratings to make money. That said controversy is great for ratings so if anyone is looking for them to kick anyone out it's probably not going to happen. Talking on these threads and expressing our outrage is good too. Sometimes it's easier to speak up when injustices occur when you know you are not the only one who feels something is wrong. Dialogue is one of the best ways to enact change. By staying quiet you give permission to injustice. Lastly many of the houseguest are guilty of prejudiced remarks. There is no degrees of prejudice. It's all wrong. Whether it is whispered in the sauna of a country club, or openly screamed out in the streets it is just as wrong. At least when people are open about itthey can be confronted. The silent, under the surface types of prejudice are actually the most dangerous. How do you fight them?
  3. I actually don't think any of the pejudiced comments made by any of the house guests should be censored. I would just like to see all of them aired, not just a select few. On t.v. we have seen Janelle make a comment about Ivette and "getting off the boat" or something like that. Why had none of what Ivette is saying being aired? She signed on to be in Big Brother, she KNOWS she's being taped and recorded, if she chooses to speak in such a way it sould be shown. Let everyone see the bigot she is. That is my one big issue. Racism and other forms of prejudice exist. We don't live in an ideal world. People actually talk this way to their family and friends. The reason I want it aired is because perhaps when someone hears how crass and disgusting she sounds it will make them think about what they sound like and reconsider laughing at jokes or making comments themselves. I think Ivette and any other player should be left in the house. It is reality t.v. and unfortunately reality is ugly sometimes. CBS should make it clear they do not endorse what is being said but they shouldn't censor it. Sweeping prejudice under the rug does not eliminate it. All you are doing then is telling people its o.k. to actually be prejudiced just don't express those beliefs in public. Whether it is expressed or not prejudice is a fact in our society. The only real way to combat prejudice is by shedding light on it, getting people to talk and exposing why it is wrong. This could be a great opportunity to do just that.
  4. I read through all the posts on this thread and I felt I just had to say something. I don't think that Canadianprincess was trying to attack freedom of speech. The objective was to let CBS know that some fans think Ivette is going to far. If this is really such a social experiment and Ivette has the right to express these types of opinions, why is it not being aired for the public on tv? I don't have a live feed and read throgh theses message boards to know what is REALLY going on. I have to admit I was shocked when I read all the things Ivette is saying. The "creative editting" has made her out to be a much nicer person then she obviously is in reality. Either they should remove her or air her comments for everyone to dissect. As for freedom of speech, it is correct that this means that people have a right to thier opinions and have a right to express them. Even if those comments are racist, crude and downright classless (like Ivette.... opps there's my freedom of speech going!!!) BUT..... that said as a means of providing information CBS has a moral responsibility to point out that language of this nature is UNACCEPTABLE. Hiding it using fishes of the house, or just airing it on the internet and not T.v. is tantamount to them saying, "it is o.k. for her to express this on a national forum." They think it is important to ostracize a woman for flashing a nipple but not to publicly decry what Ivette is saying? That's just wrong in my opinion. What Ivette is doing could be labelled a hate crime as well as slander. She is saying that Kayser could basically lead his "side" to do things like Osama did to his terroroist cells. She is trying to use someone's culture against them. Once again just my opinion. Since it can obviously get heated here I'm just gonna run over in my little fox hole and hid out hoping to avoid any objects tossed at me.... Hee hee just kidding. lol
